a footballers 'personal terms'

Wages, bonuses, things like that.

Normally a club approaches another club, they negotiate a fee for the player. The club buying then can talk to the player himself, and thrash out things like the above.

So it's not just about paying enough to buy the player, they need to pay enough to make the player want to come as well. :)

That's the way things should be done however I'd guess that in at least 90% of deals, the buying club has already agreed a deal with the player before even speaking to the other club.

Well yeah, scrub the word "normally" then. That's how the FA like it done - but sadly you do get a lot of players "tapped up".

90% of the time its talking about primarily the weekly wage, sometimes it will be 50k a week a 2k appearance fee and a 4k goal bonus, sometimes it will be a flat 54k and average out to the same thing. The way a wage is made up isn't particularly important, it will be when a player wants 50k and the club won't go beyond 30k that things break down.

99% of breakdowns in deals are when a player wants more than the club is offering and the club won't be negotiated higher.

I'm almost certain that Pienaar's deal failed because he wanted a LOT more money than they thought a backup midfielder was worth.
