Hey all,

My next door neighbours' son has attempted to "install" a firewire card. They called me round because having done that, their LAN port (intergrated into mobo) wasn't working. I checked around, and windows wasn't recognising any LAN port, nor was it listed in device manager. So first I'm thinking it might be some hardware damage the son has done, and open the PC up.

When I opened it up, the firewire card was simply lying around in the pc . Nice installation job  I discharged myself etc, then put the card in. However, having done that, the display adapter (also integrated into mobo) is now borked. I've tried it on different monitors, but neither pick up any input from the pc. The irony of it is that now the LAN lights are flashing!

So, has the display adapter been taken out? Any tests I can do? I've tried taking the firewire card out, but still the display doesn't work.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Rob.

take out the firewire, reset the cmos and hopefully you should get a post. if that dont work take out all add on items plus all attached devices one stick of ram and reset cmos. i dont think there is a lot you can do without the pc posting.

edit: im not sure how you would remove the drivers if they caused the problem without it booting

I don't think it's a case of it not POSTing, but simply that the display is no longer working. Although that said, I can't really tell without having a display I guess. Catch-22 :(.

I've already tried removing the firewire, and nothing changes. So resetting the cmos is the way forward? Any other opinions?

Thanks for the reply,

Rob.

is the video card intergrated? if the board does have an AGP slot, you could try using a spare video card if you have one laying around.

Reset the cmos first though, then maybe the video drivers.

Make sure the ram and everything else is seated correctly though.

Yeh, it's integrated, but strangely the board doesn't have an AGP slot (its an old time machine with an XP 2000 cpu). I've double checked all connections and they seem fine, but still no luck.

Anything else?

Thanks,

Rob.

Hmmm.

Main things I can think of is possibly a PCI graphics card? maybe someone you know has one laying around somwhere?

the ram could be damaged, if possible replace that to?

I assume all the fans and so on are turning?

I go on holiday monday, so am really busy at the moment. I think I might just have to give it them back, and get them to take it to somewhere where no-doubt they will be ripped off. I've no PCI-Graphics card, changing the memory hasn't changed. All fans, cd drives, hard disks etc are spinning, which makes me think it might just be the display adapters been knocked or something?

I guess they might "just" need a new mobo. No doubt their son's not going to be Mr Popular this afternoon :D.

Thanks again,

Rob.
