Hi all, I am helping out a friend by sorting out a website for his Butchers shop. He is wanting to expand his business, not by opening more shops but by posting flyers and having a website/page about his business. He is starting home delivery around the Derbyshire area and has a flyer made by me and my girlfriend so he can distribute it to locals.

I mentioned to him about having a website of some discription just advertising his business and promoting home delivery etc. Nothing too flash, just information and the like with the possiblity to add online ordering at a later date.

What exactly would he need to start this up?

From what I remember he will need this-

  • Hosting (not free, has to have good customer support and good site building tools etc)
  • Website design software (any that is good and doesn't cost the Earth)
  • FTP software to upload web design (I have filezilla)
  • A way to advertise his business online (no idea how to do this)
Anything else?

If he likes our flyer we did for him I think he would ask me to sort all this out for him. I am no expert on website design but like I said all he wants to something showing what he does and ways of promoting his business and I am pretty sure I can do that.

Help is needed.. Thanks:)

vidahost or TSOHost

About £20 a year for hosting and domain name.

Filezilla is fine for FTP

Design website in HTML / CSS, upload to hosting using filezilla, bob's your mother's brother

I'll be the first (of many) to suggest Wordpress. Plugins mean he can use twitter/facebook etal to promote, and there are a few shopping carts available to sell online. You can get a multitude of themes to get the look you wish, and with tsohost at least, fantastico installs wordpress for you....

Out of interest what's the name of the shop? The reason I ask was I was going to sort out a site for someone who has a butcher's shop in Derbyshire but they kept putting it off/didn't get around to properly going over it with me.

Bit of an update folks.

The last few weeks we have been talking about this site with him. He decided to go ahead with it and to leave it to me once I went through the information on GBBO with him.

We got the url he wanted and since Sunday I have been putting together the layout and testing various things on the site. Its early days yet but I would like you to have a 'butchers' (see what I did there) at the site so far. All graphics are done by me in Photoshop. There is one malfunction I have spotted which I will rectify and that is one of the headers on the left side bar has glitches.

C&C very much welcome. He's happy so far and is very chuffed with it and how it is progressing.

Also one other thing... This GBBO thing, Do we have to use googlesites to make website or can I use some other editor? Reason I am asking is that Nominet.org is mentioned in the emails etc. Just wondering if they host the site? IF so could I use something else and upload it instead of using google to edit the pages etc.

from a very quick look

the come dine with me image should link to something - not itself
the meat packs page would look much better without the drop shadow on the text http://www.jhlockhartbutchers.co.uk/freezer-packs

the text on main page is a little compacted (wasting space) (highlighted in red)
the hygine info could do with moving to the right a touch (highlighted in brown)

the map on the contact page may as well be a little larger as you have plenty of space

when you hover over a button but dont quite go over the text, the text disapears (white on white )

not sure why you are using a sky email address if you have your own domain [email protected]

These are all my own opinion and there to help rather than criticise.

EDIT***

just looking at another thread here and figured your main page could maybe do with a picture of the actual shop - like this page http://blackheathepetsupplies.herobo.com/pet/
Adds a little to the site

Cheers for the quick reply.. We are currently getting images of the shop, van (Home delivery page) and a few others including lots of products he sells.. Thats all happening in the next week or so..

I will change the Come dine with me link later. Thanks for reminding me. I was going to do it actually...

I agree with the hygiene thing to move over a little.. Good spot.

As for the sky email address. At the moment all his (the owner of the shop etc) email, contacts for his business are with that email.. I did mention to him about using the domain email. That is something to arrange soon..All his flyers, letters etc have his sky address on so it will take a bit to get everything changed over..

Its early days like I said and your points are very welcome.....

You should easily be able to setup a forwarding rule on the domain email to forward/filter any email to his sky address.

I'm not sure there's much you can do about anyone who currently has/uses his sky email address (besides encouraging them to use the new domain address), but it might be worth saying that "after this point, I'm only giving out the domain address". it looks more professional and with the forwarding bit setup, all previous customers/contacts will still be able to contact him.

*if he wanted to go all out then he could setup both the sky and domain accounts up in Outlook, he'll receive all email regardless of where it's sent to but has the choice of replying to everything as the domain account by showing and altering the "From" field. That may force majority of people to switch without them even realising assuming the simply reply instead of composing a new message :)

Get rid of that food hygiene thing out of the top banner!! Fair enough if he'd won awards for his meat then I'd have them there, but not just for his hygiene :p

Just put it in the About Us page or in the sidebar.

Hi guys. I have just done a little update again with a, what I deem, a better more slick layout with better images, buttons etc,. Not all the pages are done but a few are including the main page.

The Butcher man has got some images of the van, shop front etc so once I get those emailed to me I will be doing some more graphics to make it more professional..

Please bare in mind it is my first go at a real, proper website. :-)
