Im pretty sure am3 socket cpus dont support ddr2

yeah, i did an upgrade on a shoestring budget. Basically, had the case, drives and decent psu already, splashed out on the motherboard (790 GX) and RAM, then skimped on the cpu. So to start with i was running an (un-unlockable :( ) sempron 140 with hd3300.

next payday i got me's a phenom 555 and decent cooler and was quite happy for a while with the system as it was. Ive finally managed to finish the build with a hd5770.

If you want a decent gaming system, and you think you might have some funds coming through in the near future, id splash out on the case, motherboard and psu, as that involves the most building work. Then get some cheapy components to tide you over, as cpu/gpu/ram/hdd are all simply cases of "remove old from slot/socket and pop new one in" as you acquire better components
