Hi Guys

Need some help. Im looking for a lens to use for general use for things like parties and special events. So something to replace the kit lens.

I had my eye on the 50mm 1.4 but I fear on my 500D it maybe abit long. I dont have a budget but something towards the £300 - £400 mark will be fine. Anything more needs to be very good :p.

Im currently looking at the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di II VC which seems to be on par with the Canon 17-55 f2.8.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Matt

Probably the most recommended upgrade from the kit lens is the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 Non-VC, as it's reported sharper than the VC version. I have the non-VC lens and it's brilliant. Great IQ and a great upgrade for sub £250.

And I had the 50mm 1.8 but I found that too long on a crop body so sold it. I'm looking at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 now which seems like a good focal length (48mm FF equivalent).

For indoor parties and events, I'd also look at buying a flashgun if you haven't got one already. Makes photos a lot better if it's too dark (which in all probability will be).

How about the Canon 28 f/1.8? Probably the best lens in that range and essentially the crop equivilent of the 50mm, arguably better than the Sigma above.
