Im on Sky Broadband, and have the standard sky router.

Ive been wanting to replace it for a while now, because I have my ps3, 2 xbox 360s , 2 laptops and a desktop connected to it, and for example when Im on my pc and my brothers on his 360, it slows right down for both.

I want a decent router, but would it be possible to get one where I can limit each connection to how much bandwith (think thats the right word) they can have?

For example 600kb download - 200kb for the pc (me) so I can surf and download, and 400kb for me brother so he can play and not get lag issues because Im downloading of the internet.

Sorry for long post - cheers guys :D

in my experience the sky router is very annoying
it has so many restrictions that are simply not in place on an off the shelf router

i would stick with the sky router and avoid the hassle of messing around calling sky support

The problem with the sky routers is that they have your login details hard coded in to them and it's not easy to get that info out. The netgear ones aren't too difficult I suppose but the Sagem ones are impossible at the moment.

Hold on a sec mate expand on that please :)

ok
so my boss gets sky broadband because of the perks

tv/phone/bb etc

so i have to go set it up because im 'good with computers' etc etc

so my logic is to do what i have done with every router + wireless network i have ever set up
  • plug the hardware in
  • go to the router firmware page. eg. 'routerhome.net' or whatever
  • type in the broadband username and passwords
  • find wep/wpa key and set up wireless devices using that... etc etc

except with sky its completley different - they give you two dodgey codes - that in no way will work with any other hardware but that which they supply

in both instances i have installed it into peoples houses i have ended up replacing top of the range £70+ routers with the inferior Sky ones.

and if you call sky customer services to ask them for a username and password like other isp's provide then they palm you off and say that they...
  • only support their own hardware
  • cannot provide the password as they are not authorised

i called them on three seperate occasions and told them i would like to use my existing hardware and was given a different answer each time

then the best of it was that they told me
"if you dont use your Sky router then your broadband wont work at all and it will corrupt your sky tv reception"

good old indian call centers

i would write to sky and inform them of their stupidity

but im not with them - my boss and 'mother in law to be' are so more fool them;)

Can Wireless and Gaming be used in the same sentence like that? seriously cable alll the way! doesnt matter if you have to break a load bearing wall down to get that wire through

im not saying the sky router is bad

im just saying that they make it really difficult to use your own hardware

be careful about switching routers with sky broadband, you have to use a special tool to get your username and password, and if they detect that you switched routers your interenet will be cut off

what problems are you having with the sky router? i have found them both to be very good and reliable

the more wireless devices connected to the router the mroe the transfer speeds go down, it sucks but its a limitation in wireless. There are graphs around the internet of how it scales.
Netgear 834 all models are nice. Ciso are very good but etend to be too expensive for the average home user.
