My GeForce 8600 GTS has just fried and died in my Dell system. Replacing the 375W-400W power supply is not an option as I would need to replace the motherboard and case as well, and it may well be better to just buy a new computer completely.

So Im looking for a replacement for the 256mb 8600GTS I had, without having to upgrade my power supply. Im looking for something that matches, or surpasses the performence of my 8600GTS, any ideas please?

The ASUS one with the big cooler is a lovely card, bought one the other day for a rig I was putting together, nice and quiet and runs very cool.

Just looking on the ATI website, it recommends a 400W PSU for the 4670 cards. Having checked, my PSU is only 375W.

Would this be adequate enough? Or will it just fry?

It'll be more than fine, i'm pretty sure in reviews the entire system load of a core 2 rig with one of these was about 210W.

ATi just have to cover their behinds ;)

Great, much appreciated! Im gonna buy the PowerColor version, as Asus is out of stock and I need one asap. If it dies on me though, I'll blame you Hex :P

ATI and Nvidia are ultra-conservative when it comes to minimum power recommendations. I don't see any problem using a 4670 with your setup. If you have a heavily overclocked quad and you're running 4 hard drives then maybe you need more PSU. If you are running the CPU at stock and you have 1 hard drive and DVD drive then I think you're OK.

Well either you had a dodgy one, or the one I got was a fluke as the thing is silent...

Another vote for the 4670 - running one myself and it copes with all the games I play quite nicely even at 1920x1200 :)
I'm also running on a 400W psu and have a quadcore in there clocked to 3GHz - not had any stability issues since I build the rig about 4 months ago.

Heh! just my luck HeX . . . was purchased pretty much at release so maybe it's something they fixed, thing sounded like a hair dryer and took up three slots (in a uATX board too!).

I think the Sapphire HD4670 was the best I used, that fan was also a bit whinny!

Thing is, as much as I like the HD4670 I'm just feeling the HD4830 gives you almost 100% extra performance for +£25 :p

I'm running that Sapphire HD4830 above in an overclocked Wolfdale system powered by an Antec EarthWatts 380w, looking at the power meter as I type this the max power draw I am seeing is 185watts from the wall socket (while lOOping 3DMark).

Heh, should be working really! :o

Well iv ordered the PowerColor version of the 512mb HD 4670. Although I would like a more powerful card, im limited by the PSU and a budget :(. This should be more than adequate, and actually a decent upgrade from my 256mb 8600 GTS. Thanks guys :D

Apparently, this has a decent, ultra quiet cooler. But thats according to PowerColor, so we'l see.

I think the quality of your PSU will matter more than the actual rating. If that's some cheap, generic 375w then you could be in for some hassles. If it's a quality brand like Antec, Enermax, etc then you'll be fine ;)
