Canon POWERSHOT S2 IS DIGITAL CAMERA
36 - 432 mm equiv.
12x optical zoom
Image Stabilized (lens shift type)
F2.7 - F3.5

or

KODAK EASYSHARE P880
Fast f/2.8 24–140 mm wide-angle lens (5.8zoom)
8.0 MP sensor

the canon is roughly £30 more, at £430, I like the idea of a high powered zoom, but the canon is "only" 5mp... (still double what i got) where as the Kodak is 8mp but less zoom... The price is alittle higher than what i would have wanted but i do like these two cameras as i find 3x zoom way too limited.

What would you choose? and are there any better choices for this price range?

thanks :)

If you shop around the canon S2 IS can be had for around £300.

Equally as good as the Canon, and even cheaper is the Sony DSC-H1 (around £240). Its what I have and I'm very happy with it.

Check out the relevant forums at dpreview.com for more user opinions, but between the S2 and H1, most people who have tested them side-by-side seem to end up going for the H1.

Oh yeah, just thought I'd mention that replacement models for both the S2 and the H1 are due in the next couple of months.

yeah i just noticed the S3 IS.... looks good, however i did want a new camera for the start of the new BTCC season.. never mind ill just nick my dads for the weekend ;)

im not sure on sony's myself, because i dont like the fact you have to buy sony mem sticks for them... SD or CF is the standard, and i have loads of SD cards floating around...

What would make a DSLR better than lets say the Canon S3 IS?

edit: Also DSLR's cant do films can they? thats a big minus to what the S3 IS and other digi cams can do.... so whats the big plus? :)

DSLR cant do movie mode, its an unfortunate problem of having a reflex mirror.

The big plus side is unrivaled image quality, speed and control over taking pictures.

when you say "speed and control" do you mean how fast it takes the image? for instance on the digital cameras i have theres a second or so delay on taking the picture, after pressing the button.... which often makes it hard to snap a fast moving object... like a plane, or a racing car

Yeah, that's what I mean by Speed. Compacts tend to be slower at focusing and calculating exposure often leading to a delay between pressing the shutter and capturing the image.

DSLRs are much faster at focusing leading to less of this delay. It doesnt mean it wont happen because in some circumstances the AF wont be able to achieve focus leading to it hunting but generally it will be much quicker.

The higher up the DSLR food chain you go the quicker the focusing gets.
