A-level Film Studies?

It's all about getting the balance right. It's all very well being sanctimonious and saying "do what you want" but when it comes to applying to uni you'd be stuffed if you hadn't studied the courses you need to get on to your desired course.

Aye I know, but that was just my personal example, I didn't really have intentions of going to university so I just studied what I thought would interest me (I didn't go to uni : p)

It depends what uni you want to go and what course you want to do. Unis in the Russell Group don't like anything with "studies" in the name, and most only class 'traditional' (e.g. maths, english, sciences, politics, law, economics etc..) subject grades if you're applying.

Thanks for all the replies, I am not convinced that Film Studies wouldn't be the right choice.

How about Sociology? Would this be in the same category as Psychology? What would you say is the more difficult A-level?

Thanks again.

I would think that would fall into the same category as Psychology. If you are aiming high stick with the doing the traditional subjects.

i did media for a yr as n AS im doin business studies at uni and it has opened my eyes big time to advertising and subtle things in the media. its interesting and easy ucas points, but i only did it for the other benefits...such as opening my eyes and helping me largely when looking at marketing. other than that its nothing special.

How did you do in English?

Hi, I'm just wondering what the general opinion is on Film Studies as an A-level. I'm considering taking it along side English and Law, but I'm not too sure. I could do with an "easier" A-level considering I'm doing English and Law, but how do Unis generally rate Film Studies? Is the reputation of the course down there with Media Studies?

Thanks.

I would say so, yes.

Why are you only doing 3 AS levels ?

Or did I read your post completely wrong. :D

I'd reccomend Government and politics or History to go along with English and Law.

I'm doing I.C.T, Physics, Maths and Economics for AS.

Sociology is a joke and up there with Film Studies in its usefulness.

I was forced to take a sociology unit as part of my degree (I read history at uni). Thankfully it was in my first year and did not count towards my final degree. Here's how I tackled a history essay and the two sociology essays I wrote:

History:

1. Do research. Write essay. Proof read essay five or six times. Refine the English (cut out unnecessary words and simplify the English as much as possible).

Sociology module:

1. Watch TV. Write essay. Proof read essay. Beef up the English (use my thesaurus to replace simple words with much larger and complicated words. Do this as much as humanly possible).

I really wish I was joking with the above. I passed the Sociology module with flying colours. It was an utter joke. I could not understand even one sentence of an essay I wrote, but the tutors loved the flowery use of language. I assume all the big intelligent looking words made up for the fact the subject matter was none existent. The feedback I received on one of the essay's was priceless: "Wonderful use of the English language." I actually thought I'd completely raped the language personally.

I honestly think sociology is a front for sociologists the world over to have a circle jerk and make themselves feel intelligent, when the reality is that sociology is not a subject, but an abuse of the English language.

Mate Sounds like your establishment was a joke...not sociology. Its a very large, broad and throughly interesting subject which i believe could clear this country of a large amount of the ignorance that plagues a good 80% of the population

More than 80% to be honest. But Sociology is pretty useless at A-Level

i disagree but we'll agree to disagree eh? i think as myslef as a very open minded fellow and sociology really gave me some perspective ya know but hey thats my opinion
