I'm about to do a little upgrade from the system below on the cheap and looking for advice.

Proposed upgrade would be a phenom either a 9850 or 9950
either nvidia 260 or ati 4870 1gb

the mem well either 4gb 800 or now accourding to the asus webiste with the latest BIOS i can use 1066 mem but not too sure

I know i could upgrade the motherboard etc but i really don't want to do a full new build till next year geared for a phenom 2 or the new intel so i'm just looking for best bang for buck for ganing at the mo lol

any advice would be good

Well the ram is something you will have to decide yourself m8,weather or not you want to use the 1066MHz,

If your mobo can now support that then i'd say go for it :)

Personally if your thinking of the 9850 or the 9950,You might as well go for the 9950 as the price diff between that and the 9850 is only about a tener,
And the clock speed ain't too bad (2.60GHz),Not to mention you could always overclock.

As for G-Card i deffo recommend the 4870,I have one of those badboys in my system and they are amazing m8 :)

with regards to the phenom the 9950 is now out of stock lol i just hope they get more in around the 05/12/08 lol

the memory worries me with overclocking but i suppose i could drop it to 800 etc and work my way up a little lol

or as i alreay have 2gb 800 if i put another 4gb in so i have 6gb lol i'm just worried about running the 4gb at 1066 then overclocking don't want to burn anything out lol

i don't want to start a debate about the 4870 and the 260 but people are saying the 260 216 is better than the 4870 as the ati driver are not the best at the moment

but besides all that do you think i should see a decent performance increase?

Yes m8,Even though the clock speed is slower than the one you have now,You will notice the difference in gaming as games will be a lot smoother and multi tasking will be a breeze too.

Plus instead of 2 cores you will have 4,I know there's not a lot of programs/games etc... that use 4 cores yet,But give it time and you be happy with the choice you've made.

Also you don't really have to overclock yet anyways,You said you wanna upgrade your mobo after crimbo,Wait till then and get better ram sticks for the new mobo that are good for overclocking with :) ( plus a good fan :P )

As for the 4870 xD i only say go for that as i have one myself and i rate it 100% m8.

I honestly can't say anything about the 260.
Apart from them being pricey.

cheers for the advice m8 i may just go for the cheapest 4gb 800 mem then and wait till next year lol and do the whole main system depending on how the phenom 2 turns out

i'm really stuck with the 4870 or the 260 lol suppose i could flick a coin hehe as thats the main thing for this upgrade as that will carry over to the new system next year lol

Your welcome m8 :), And you might as well too m8 :)
I gotta say it though now,I was a masive AMD fan,That's all i ever used,But i was swayed to Intel,And to be honest m8,I have never looked back. (i use my computer mainly for gaming)

Just summet to bare in mind for your upgrade next year :)

Also when i 1st came onto ocz i had my heart set on an Nvidia card,Just coz that's all i have ever used in the past,Then i saw and heard a lot of good things about the 4870 and it took my breath away m8 :P

Crysis/warhead,Far cry 2,Mercenaries 2,NFS Undercover,Cod 5,Pure,Fallout 3 and dead space all on the very high settings and there's not even a hickup whilst playing m8 :)

hmmmm food for thought there lol is that with the latest drivers?

I know it sounds daft but I just want to get the best I can for now if you know what I mean lol

i have fallout 3 and dead space lol but refused to play them on my currebt system as the performance was not really good enough really

also running vista 64bit aswell

if i did go for the 4870 it would be this one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...&subcat=939&name=Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 "Golden%20Sample"%201024MB%20GDDR5%20TV-Out/Dual%20DVI/HDMI%20(PCI-Express)%20-%20Retail

also on my system now i have the amd dual core optimiser installed would i need to unistall that? also is there one for the phenoms?

You could go with that if you wanted m8 as it's aslo a really good card.

Or the one i have atm is..

HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

which is about £30 cheaper than the - Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 "Golden Sample" 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

But as much as i love the card i have,After crimbo i will be puttin this card in my sons computer and investing in a 4870 x2

HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

As for the drivers,Ati are getting more and more rock solid these days m8 :)
