A little advice.

Hello there, I am running an AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz along with the Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 AMD, and 16gb Kingston ram. Could somebody suggest a good GPU around the £200-250 mark. Thanks. :)

Thanks. Great spec, but will be a bit long for the case. I'm mulling a 670GTX mini due to power consumption and space saving. I know the CPU will bottleneck it a bit but just how much I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

The 670 mini - isn't that about £300? If so it's stupid money for performance. Are you in a tiny case?

The 5800K isn't the best CPU for a high end card. Console games will be fine, but you won't see much benefit in CPU intensive games. You might be better off getting the 7950 and looking to upgrade your board/CPU.

Hello Gregster. I have a standard ATX, and when I tried to transfer my 6950 2GB from my old rig it just about fit, but boy it was tight. Am I correct in thinking that the 7950 is of similar dimensions?

That makes sense. The 7950 that I linked is closer to 12"

Bare with me and I will have a scout about :)

Edit:

Ok Rob, this card comes in at 10.5" (a smidge over(currently out of stock))

and this one comes in at 11" (and the card I would choose out of these 2)

The more I think about it, the price of that Top just makes choosing simple. It is within your budget and a fantastic card. It does take up slightly more than 2 slots, so if you have anything else plugged into the PCI-E, that could be an issue.

That's really kind. Thanks. I also liked the low power consumption of the GTX670, bearing in mind my PSU is a 430 watt corsair. Re the price, I've seen one for £211, which I though was excellent.

Interestingly, even using my old setup, as shown below (which I need to change!!) the 6950 was handling everything up until Crysis 3. Metro Last Light also smacked it around a bit, hence me figuring it was time to upgrade. I've been suprised how well the old Q8200 2.33GHz has coped.

I am sticking with my original choice :)

If you are upgrading, the only choice for me is to go for that 7970 and get a new PSU maybe?

Not sure how much the games are selling for now but you could possibly sell those and get your budget target. The 6950 was a great card and can still hold its own with modern games and this is why you should only consider the top cards as a jump. If you are in no rush of course, AMD are about to releae details about their new cards and they could surprise with the mid range cards price/performance but I doubt the power consumption will be low enough. I feel even with your 6950, you are pushing the limits of that PSU, so I see an upgrade as more of a 'when' and not an 'if' but I would rather others gave their input on PSU requirements, as this isn't my strongest ssubject.

Food for thought Rob :)

The old Core chips are great aren't they. I'm currently running a q9450 with a single GTX260 and still manage to play games with details turned down :)

I think I need to add a power supply to my shopping list!! Looking at the 7970 it does look a fine option. Have just sold a Samsung tablet for £230 so I'm ready to rumble!!

I'd get a 7970 over the 7950 as well, and the HIS 7950 (if it fits) because of its reputation for being quiet with a rear exhaust.

The 5800K can usually be pushed to about 4.5-4.8GHz, and it'll perform well enough with most games. In some (like Tomb Raider) it'll perform basically the same as an i7, as quite a few consoley games are fairly low on CPU usage.

Sounds like a plan. I can't see those 7970's being around for too long either, as I now expect them to be end of line.

I do hope someone else will advise on a PSU though, as I just went for a cheap, reliable one :)

Regarding the PSU, I did some initial sums and I thought it would be ok. On reflection I probably should have gone 550-600watt and taken a more belt and braces approach. Either way, it's easy enough to change so no biggie. Must say that a small part of me is curious about the incoming AMD GPU's.
