Well after 8 years of owning my PC I bit the bullet and ordered a new one through OC. My question is a heat sink required for M2 SSD?

The motherboard I have selected is an ASUS TUF Z690 and that says it has M2 Heatsink. Would this be all I need or do I need to change my order to the M2 SSD with Heatsink??

Any advice is greatly appreciated as a lot has changed since ordering my last PC.

Thanks.

It depends on the m.2, but if they don't come with one then they're usually fine. I expect OC will fit the board one if it's appropriate.

The M.2 is the WD SN850 1TB. I just don’t want to risk anything happening to it. I don’t do intensive stuff on the PC but it will be used quite a lot.

hi there, I have a SN850 1Tb and it seems to run fine with the MB heatsink.

Personally I feel that the faster M.2 drives need some kind-of heatsink - doesnt have to much (just the one on the Motherboard should be enough, manufacturers have gone a bit crazy with making you feel you need a massive heatsink for a drive). The slower m.2 drives (say like the SN550 etc.) dont really need a heatsink but doesnt hurt if you bung one on anyway. I guess if you use the drive very heavy you may need a bigger heatsink, but for typical usage you dont need that crazy heatsink.

Thanks for the advice. The soul use of the PC is for gaming but I plan to install all my steam games on a secondary drive on the computer. Just hoping OC use the motherboard heatsink. Will have to give them a call on Monday when they open and have a chat with them.
