Hey guys, just want to throw my idea up here for updating my home network (Used for streaming media) to see if there are any likely problems with what I'm thinking of doing.

1) buy a new system to run unRAID on which simply consists of case, mobo, usb flash to boot from, psu and a bunch of sata drives with my data on.

2) connect this to a gigbit switch which then goes to some ethernet sockets which I am having fitted in 3 rooms in my house, these are for connecting to a Mac Mini, and a couple of Acer 3610's Windows 7 all running XBMC.

I'm currently running the mac mini of a mixture of wireless for some media and local usb drives for other media which I'd to avoid doing by centralising all the disks which should make it easier to manage. I currently have a synology DS210J streaming to the systems by wireless N which does a decent job but I need more drives and would prefer to go wired! so this will be going the distance.

One area I am a little unsure on is:

This NAS machine and switch will be downstairs in the utility room, my main router which gets the internet is in my bedroom so I'd also need to take a lan cable from the switch in the utility room to the router upstairs and by doing this all the media machines that are connected to the gigabit switch would get the internet connection also?

Any advice or info anybody has on this side of things would be really useful as I'm currently almost of space and looking to buy the hardware ASAP.

Cheers! all :D

Yes once you link the switch to the router, all devices plugged in to the switch would be able to use the internet the same as if they were plugged directly in to the router.
