Hey ladies and gentlemen!

So a few years back I built myself a nice rig with an i7920 @3.9GHz, 6gb Ram, and an HD 5850.

Due to lack of funds upgrades have been a long time coming.

I've just picked up the DGM 1440p monitor (what a stunner) and next pay day is new GPU day.

As mentioned I'm looking to play in 1440p.

My PRIMARY concern is maxing out skyrim with a gazzillion mods.

That being said I want to get the most out of games like Arkham City, Far Cry, and the online shooters as well.

Can anyone please advise me on what 1.) I need, 2.) I should go for ideally if I can afford to, 3.) the frame rates I'm likely to get on a heavily modded Skyrim.

I've done some reading, but wanted to get social on this one and hear your thoughts first hand.

What do you think people?

Cheers.

skyrim = nvidia slightly
arkham city = nvidia for physx (although iirc amd runs it faster? lol)

however, skyrim + mods @ 1440p = ram hog and the 3gb on 7950/70 may be worth it.
the 4gb 670/680 would be fine too but be aware you're paying for the extra 2gb vram pretty much solely for skyrim mods.

1440p is taxing on gpus so frames won't be great in newer games with 1 gpu. it's a lot more pixels than 1080p (iirc it's something around 1.7 times more pixels but I may be wrong)

7950 or 7950x2 is probably going to be the consensus..

Thanks for the swift reply guys.

I see in the shop the KFA2 GTX 670 4GB going toe-to-toe price wise with the MSI 7970 Lightning.

Are they worthy competitors in this arena?

Also @OptimaLnrg - I thought PhysX was one of NVidia's USPs? Back when Arkham Asylum came out I thought AMD cards didn't support it? Was this not/is this no longer the case?

The lightning will be much faster.

However, the card I would get would be the WF 7970.

This one's a Ghz edition 7970, cheaper version oft he lightning.

As you play Skyrim mainly and use lots of mods, I would have said a 7950 however you also play Batman, which is fantastic on Nvidia cards with the PhysX effects to make it look better.

Some will say it isn't worth it but IMO, I bought a 680 to get the best graphical detail and some of the PhysX games have the extra pretties that AMD owners will not see.

Your money Josh and personaly, I would look to the KFA2 4GB 670 to get the best of both worlds. Frame wise, if you didn't use a counter, you wouldn't be any the wiser and the 670 is a stonking card.

I'm leaning in this direction. Anyone care to second this? Will I truly be none the wiser in Skyrim? Will it live up to its namesake and really Kick ******* Arse?

Thanks for all the help.

A 7950 3GB @ ~£239 is your best option IMO. It's only 5% slower than a 680/7970 and it matches/surpasses a 670 depending on the game.

It has enough RAM on it already so you aren't paying a premium to run Skyrim mods alone (the extra 2GB is unlikely to be beneficial in anything other than Skyrim). That said, you do need to run quite a considerable amount of mods to breach 2GB anyway but it is definitely possible.
