Hi guys,

I built a PC for my dad and its started acting up.

When he turns it on it posts fine and then gets to the windows loading screen and starts to load windows. Then the loading bar freezes for a while and then starts again and this then loops until its restarted.

I cant figure out what it could be at all and just wondered if any of you have had or know of similar problems and a way to fix it.

SPEC:

AMD 3000 Winchester (stock)
Foxconn SLI mobo (not sure of exact model as its at my dads house)
Geil value 1gb
seagate 250gb hdd
7600GT
Windows XP PRO

Its been working fine for a few weeks and then suddenly started doing this. He also said it has crashed a few times and theres just been a black screen.

Everything is reported as working in device manager.

There is one strange thing though, theres a "remove this device safely" icon in the tools tray continuously. When i click it it says remove mass storage device C: and D: which i don't really want to be doing :D. But could that be something to do with the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you installed the nVidia IDE driver when you installed the chipset drivers.

This sounds promising. Would that explain the "remove device safely" in the tools tray? I cant remember if i installed that or not but I'll have a look. I think i used the CD i got with it and installed just the drivers.

Is that driver not required as ive put an IDE dvd burner in there?

The thing is though its been working fine for over a month and even now it only does this now and again. Some times it will boot up fine.

Also i remember when i built the PC my dad didn't want it for a few weeks as he was doing his office up. I then turned it on a couple of weeks later to update XP etc and it did this. I ended up doing a fresh install before i gave it him and i thought that had sorted it.

also remove the nVidia firewall

yes the nVidia IDE allows SATA hot plug

the microsoft ide willl work fine with a dvd burner

Thanks for the help, i'll give it a go over the weekend and then report back if its still doing it to see if anyone has any other suggestions.

I'd clean install XP again, then go from there....

I did do a fresh install and the problem has re-occurred. Unless you meant do a fresh install but this time dont install the IDE driver?

If you do start again set a retore point before you install the chipset drivers so you can go back if it goes t**s up.

Cheers, i'm hoping i can just remove it via add and remove and itll work. But that would be too easy i guess lol.

The only other thing i can think of is that the DVD burner itsself is on its way out. I remember when i built my first computer i forgot to plug the molex into the burner and windows did exactly what his is doing.

It works fine when its in windows. The only other problem hes had was he couldnt get a dvd to play in WMP11 or real player. I installed FFD Show when i built it so i'm not sure what thats about. I sent him VLC media player and that plays them fine.
