I'm wondering about a graphics upgrade...I currently run an X1950XTX on a E6600 C2D/Asus P5B/4Gb RAM system running Vista x64 and displaying on dual monitors, the larger of which is a 24" 1920 x 1200. I don't play a wide variety of games but I do spend too much time playing EvE Online - and I wouldn't mind a healthy FPS boost if I can get it.

So my question is, should I snap up a last gen card while they are still available or wait for the new ATI stuff? I'm not keen on the prices and a couple of other aspects of the 260/280 so I guess I'm wondering what sort of performance increases I would see going from my X1950 XTX to (for example) an 8800 GTS or a 4850/70 (or even, say, a 3870X2)?

It's been a while since I bought a graphics card so thought I'd canvas for a few opinions while waiting for the ATI reviews to land...

Thanks!

well as an 8800GTS (G92) owner, I would say wait untill ATI's 4850 comes out, as imo that looks the most attractive (price/performance) That what I would do.

So the feeling is that the 4850 will be a significant step up from a 512Mb 8800 GTS? And I presume that either would show my current card a thing or two at *** res I play at..?

A little bump...still looking for some input as to how much of a step up it would be from an X1950 XTX to an 8800 GTS 512Mb, 3870 or 4850 for use with a 1920x12100 panel...thanks.

addition to thread, also looking at which graphics card to get
E7200
2gig ram
Best bang for buck graphics card in very near future for HIGH FPS

This might help a bit:

Not sure where your x1950xtx comes, if you have COD4 maybe try a comparison.

I;m guessing your card is a pretty good match with a 7900GT from memory.

So a GTS G92 would give you more than double the framerate and a 4850 triple in that game at 1600 x 1200.

The new 4850 are shining with AA on and at 1920 x 1200 whereas the GTS G92 run out of steam a bit at that res.

So you would without doubt notice a big difference with either card.

Plus the bonus of gaining directx 10 since you are running Vista.

And the 4850 is meant to be £130 whereas until price cuts the 8800GTS is £150 so I know which one I would buy.

Even faster and slightly more expensive 4870 coming out in another week but maybe around £200 for that.

Thanks Greebo...looks like it would be worth the wait to snag a next-gen card rather than an 8800/3870 clearance item then.

Cheers.

It' not as amazing as everyone thinks you will be far better off buying a second hand 8800gtx than a new 4850.

iirc the x1950XTX should be better than a 7900GT, probably 7950/maybe 7950GX2 territory... after all it was the fastest DX9 only card from ATi and they were quite competitive back then

anyways, i say wait it out for the 4870...

If you play EVE lot i would go over to the forums next week and ask what people have got and see what the new cards are like in EVE.
there is no point in picking a card if all you play is EVE without asking people who play it as you might find a new nvidia or ati card is a lot better then the other make and if they are about the same with EVE then i would myself look at other benchmarks.

x1950XTX was around 7900GTX performance - slightly faster in some stuff - the 7950GX2 was almost twice as fast in many situations...

I saw a huge performance boost (more than I expected) going from a 7950GX2 to an 8800GT - so I'd say 1950 to 8800GTS (G92) would be worth it... hard to put exact numbers on it as I'm more used to nVidia tech... but I saw 30% increases over the GX2 with the 8800GT in most games and twice the performance in some shader heavy games... so your looking at around 2-3.5x gains in your case.
