A little help required choosing a graphics card

Hey all. I'm looking to replace my ageing AMD 7850 with either a nVidia GTX 770 or an AMD 280X in order to move up in the monitor world to the heady heights of 1440p. I'm mainly concerned with gaming, but I do a little bit of photoshop illustration and photo editing here and there as well...so any performance differences in that department would be a bonus!

After a fair bit of research it looks to me as though both of these cards are pretty similar in terms of performance and price. I've got my eye on this guy. Anyone got any personal experiences to share or some advice as to which card I should pick?

Thanks!

For 1440 res, I would say you should get a 290 as minimum at around £320+, but you will have to bear with the possible noise (if you set a custom fanspeed profile and don't have your PC on the desk at ear-level but on the floor at around 1 meter away, the noise wouldn't be too bad when you have you speakers up to moderate level).

If you can afford around £380, then go for a custom 290 or GTX780 instead.

I guess around the £300 mark is my maximum spend here. I think I could stretch that a tiny bit to afford a 290...if that's a smart move?

Similar to what some others have said. Gaming at 1440p on fairly high settings IMO needs at least a 290/780.

I tested my frame rates by dropping the resolution on Batman Origins to 1080p and it's interesting to see the fps drop so much when I change my res back to 1440p. Still fairly good and playable ofc, around the 60/70 fps mark.

Seems the 290's are good value for money if £300 is your budget and you are ok overclocking a bit?

Anyone got any thoughts on this 290?

Yeah I'm looking into overclocking in the future. My plan is to hook up a watercooling loop into my pc at some point as it's something that I've always wanted to do but never got round to, so I'll just whack a waterblock on to my 290 and go at it then :)

For a extra tenner how about the Asus Radeon R9 290 "Voltage Unlocked", extra year warranty for £10 ;)

Removing the stock cooler doesn't validate the warranty with Powercolour if you buy through OcUK, so it makes sense to go with them (or MSI or Sapphire, who have the same policy) if you'll be watercooling.
