i want to set up raid 1 with 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB SATA-II 64MB Cache
they will be for gaming and i have over 100 games so the space is needed and i am not fussed on raid 0
my mobo is asus p5e64 evolution and its raid controller is - intel ich9r southbridge raid
If the RAID controller is intelligent enough to send read requests to alternate disk drives, RAID-1 can significantly improve read performance
so my question is this, is my raid controller smart enough to do this thus giving me read performance similar to raid 0

i checked the manual and done some googling but cannot find the answer

I've seen mention in a few places that the Intel controllers can do split reads for RAID1 but it only improves random reads. For sustained reads you're still limited to the speed of a single drive so the performance is nowhere near RAID0.

I found raid 1 on the onboard Intel controllers ICH7, 8 and 9 to be unworthwhile. Every now and then there would be synch problems, and the speed was no faster than a single drive, far better to go RAID 0 if speed is of interest to you, or seperate drives, with the second used for backups if security is your issue.

i think you guys are totally right, i will raid0 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache because i want read speed.
thanks for helping me out i appreciate your help
