Hi guys

Until a couple of days ago I knew nothing much about computers/building computers. I own a PS3 and a Sony Vaio laptop.
And after seeing a video of GTA 4 running on a pc plus a few mods, I was stunned! This then lead to seeing a vid of BF3 runing in Ultra......And now I feel the need to build my own "modest" gaming pc.
This eventually lead me here and I've thread through many, many posts trying to learn as much as possible!
I currently have a decent av set-up with a Yamaha
amp and q-acoustics 5.1 and I'm planning to link the rig into this setup. So I won't require a monitor. I also have a spare keyboard and mouse somewhere.
And an operationg system won't be needed as, if I read it correctly earlier I can use win8 for freee for a few months?
Sorry if I'm going on but would you be so kind as to spec me up?

Budget £500 ish...

Thanks in advance.

alternatively, you could try this:

bumped the gpu up to a 7850, but dropped the cpu to a pentium g620, but since its 50ish quid, think of it more of a place holder for the 3570k ;p

That was quick!! -Thank you!
I think I could push to £600 tops....Well the more I look, the more I want and the budget keeps changing. :D If I said £600 max?
I want something that will blow the ps3 out of the water and run games like gta 4 and BF3 in high settings? If it's possible with my budget?

Taking

It is over budget but will perform better and is worth the extra £50. How ever the videos you viewed will have most likely been taken on computers that well are over £1000. While this build will be a definite improvement over consoles it may fall short of your expectations.

I currently have a spare hard drive so I could leave that out of the spec for now....I think. Free up a few more £££.
I see that the the 7850 GPU gets recommended a fair bit? Is it 'that' good?
Better than the Nvidia equivalents?

its a 'cheap' current gen midrange card. and quite the overclocker too.
and no, nvidia's midrange card is not out yet ;p quite a few months overdue lol and no one knows how its gonna perform

Firstly thank you to all of you for your suggestions so far!

What sort of performance gains can be had when overclocking?
(Still learning)

if you're ocing the cpu it'll go from 3.4ghz to 4.4ghz easily
gpu wise, you'll get 7870 performance from a 7850 (so about 220 quid gpu from a 180 quid gpu)

yes its easy, slightly time consuming (if you want to extract the most performance)
no negatives, only positive
if you dont know how to oc, google is your friend

as said loads of tutorials around (including on here) but it's worth mentioning that a negative is heat, an overclocked CPU/GPU will produce more heat, requiring better cooling.

Not sure about 7850 temps when overclocked, but IB runs hot so 'no negatives' could be a bit misleading.

well even with a decent 25 quid cooler like the tranquillo, ivy bridge can hit 4.4ghz.
ivy bridge being 'hot' is a non-factor really

Thanks for that! ;)

Can I ask whats everyones opinions on the mobos suggested

Gigabyte Z77-D3H vs Gigabyte Z77-DS3H vs MSI Z77A-G43

As they are similarly priced?
