All. Thought I would treat myself to a well deserved upgrade. Would appreciate suggestions on the spec below. I'm looking for a good gaming system and enough grunt for applications like photoshop, premiere etc.

I'm not a heavy overclocker, probably push to 110% performance max when the system starts to struggle in games.

i7 is slightly out of my price range - limit £800.

Parts salvaged from my current pc:
Antec NeoPower 480W PSU (is this is enough)
WD Raptor 74gb (OS)
WD Raptor 36gb (Swap Drive)
PCI Wireless G Card
Keyboard/Mouse/Speakers
NEC 24WMGX^3 ;)

the spec above seems to be in order...;) however for what you described that you need it for i would lose the Soundcard or maybe downgrade to a cheaper one. also you will need a new PSU 600Watt and up as the 260GTX take 2 power adapters, i know this as i have one myself and it is an amazing card..apart from that all seems good...hope this helps.

He will not need a new PSU, you can buy molex to 6 pin power adaptors for very little and 480 is enough for the system (which will probably draw around 350-400 under load).

Drop sound, cheaper case and spend on other items. And go i7, can get it for 800 easily. No idea if 480 is enough for i7 and 4890?
But something along hose lines, or stick a 260 in and make it even cheaper.

Thanks for the input guys...

Thinking about it, ill drop the X-FI and make do with onboard for now. Should be able to take optical digital feed into my hifi and let that do all the work. If the Neo480 fails ill have enough cash to get a decent PSU.

Cant really justify an i7 athough its just within budget. It means getting a sub-standard mobo and losing the lian-li which i cant bring myself to do (and yes I agree its overpriced but should last me 2 to 3 system builds!). If I get good kit now, i can replace mobo, chip and ram when i7 is affordable.

Question: seeing as the orignal build is AMD, is it worth getting an ATi GPU? I've read something about "dragon platform" and how AMD + ATi are a better combo. Not sure what to make of this?

Ta,

OS

You really would be mad to spend 800 and get a x3 and not i7. Nothing substandard about a mobo in a 800 i7 limit. tripple channel ddr3. If you are outputting sound over digital, there is never any point getting a separate sound card. I& price is comparable to other set up's on ram and mobo and certainly not over priced. The chips are expensive but that's because they are so much faster.
The case uis personal choice but a 70-80 case would last 5+ years and be perfectly good build quality.

to be honest the i7 is new technology and really not necessary unless you are going to be do some really intensive stuff, if not, most of that power will be wasted so yeah no point really...

Not had much experience of AMD and ATI together so can't really comment on this...however the 260 GTX you are on about getting is well worth the money...

When the i7 becomes more affordable that's going to be a fair while yet...so personally id go for what youve quoted for...atm ive gt a E6600 which is duel core...and honestly it does for what i need it for...Gaming....Photo Editing...Website Design....Virtual Networking envonrment using Virtual PC 2007...Maya...

The PSU should be enough, doing a quick recky on PSU calculator it comes out at 400w.
But that would be top wack.

I would definately go for I7 as it's a new platform more future proff.

They won't be any difference if you run amd with nvidia or ati same with intel.

Have you looked at the xfx 4870 on offer ATM for I think it's £152, that's a steal :D

I would also get a new psu you could probably sell your for a bit a contribute that to a new one. I would reccommend the Be Quiet range

Well, seeing as this is supposed to be a treat.....

How about this at the absolute maximum i'm willing to spend (we are in a recession after all).

And yes, the Lian-Li case is staying on the list!
