A new build log

Hey Mr Doovde, glad to see it's still going ok. What's left to do?

I've got my new build tomorrow :) just taken my GFX card out and replaced with the original Radeon X800 which has now been moved to 'legacy' products on the AMD drivers website, it can't be that old can it?! Time flies!

Anyway, good luck with the rest of it, I'll be tuning back in for pics of the finished article!

I still need to connect the hard drive, optical drive, power connectors, graphics card etc. Hopefully it won't be too long.

X800 eh. I currently have a X700 pro which must be pretty old as well then. Were they praised cards when they first arrived? Good luck with your build, but I'm sure you won't need it. :)

Hows it going Mr Doovde. I did mine yesterday and its flying.
I have the same mobo as you and just a word of warning.
When installing Windows 7 it all goes well slow up until the bit after "Expanding Files"
Just in case like me you think something is wrong as its going so slow.
I Later read that Disabling Floppy in bios is supposed to help with that.

Have fun.

Thanks for the heads-up Si Lad, and I'm glad that it's flying for you. It must be a great feeling. I've nearly installed everything apart from the 2x 6 pin power connectors for the 5850 and one case fan header:

There are only two fan case headers on this motherboard; one is a 3-pin header and the other is a 4-pin. My fan connectors are all 3-pins, but one of them seems to fit onto the 4-pin male header so I guess I'm ok?

As I have 3 case fans to connect, but only 2 case fan headers, I'm wondering what I should do? I have a Akasa AK-CB002 PWM Fan Splitter Cable, so I'm guessing I can use this?

This doesn't seem to fit directly into the psu, so do I need to attach it to one of the Corsair's attached cables? Here is a picture of the psu's to help:

Again, I apologize for the picture quality.I'm also having trouble with the graphic card's 2x6 pin power connectors. I've connected both its six pins into the back of the 5850, but the 3 pin connectors at the other end wont slot into the psu:

Do I potentially need to use a Corsair connector for them as well?

Oh I forgot to mention that I cut my hand to shreds trying to fit the ATX 2x4 power connector. It was so difficult to fit in such a tight space, due to the Fortress's fan grills, that I didn't feel myself using my hand as a cheese grater on the heatsink. I've spent twenty minutes using cotton buds to remove blood from the heatsink. Actually, I should have taken a photo of the bloodstained heatsink as well. :)

Anyway, could be turning into the longest build in history. I just wish I had more time to do the things I like doing. I'm planning on buying some cable clips etc. to make the cabling nice and neat around the side of the case.

Mr Doovde,

I've got the 750W version of that power supply but the connectors are different on mine! To use the fan splitter, you need to connect the big 4-pin molex (the one in the second photo perhaps?) to a cable that came with the PSU, and connect that to the PSU. The cable in question will (probably) connect to the HX650 at one end, and then have 4 molex plugs along it's length. Mine have funny squeezy bits on to help get them off again, I guess yours will too. :)

Bloody hell that cooler is Huge :eek:

I got a bit more room around mine and certainly no Knuckle scraping..

Its running at 23 Idle. Don't know about load yet as I ain't really pushed it. The most stressful thing I have done is resize that picture in photoshop :D
According to Arctic Silver the temps will drop a bit more after the break in period of 200 hours, we shall see.
Looking good anyway. Keep up the good work :)

Thank you Josh for telling me about the fan splitter. It sure is a 'bigun' Si Lad. Still, hopefully that means it will do a good job. Nice pic by the way, and good to hear that it's all running smoothly for you.

In regards to my problem connecting the power connectors to the 5850, I've found a splitter cable with the psu. It has one 6-pin which splits into two PCI-E 6+2 pin power connectors. If I used this I'm guessing that I would plug the first 6-pin into the psu, and then the other two into their respective slots on the back of the 5850. Should I doing this?

As you can see I'm really confused. The two 6-pin power connectors that came with the 5850 will not plug into the psu.

The ones that come with the card are converters if you have an old PSU. The cable you're describing sounds right. With the HX750W, it's two separate cables, but distinctively they are the only cables with a blue connector at one end. Do you have that?

Thanks again Josh. Unfortunately I don't have the two cables that you've described. Here is a picture of them (or the best picture my camera will produce). It should help a little:

Would it be safe for both power connectors on the 5850 to use just one connector on the psu?

If that's what the cable is designed to do, I would guess so but I'd wait for confirmation. The worst that'll happen is show a message on the screen saying it isn't getting power.

Ok, I'll wait for confirmation. I was a little bit worried about powering two of the 5850's power connectors through one connector in the psu. However,as you say, that's what they seem to be designed for. Thanks again.

what psu is it?

Im using the Corsair 850w hx. There are 4 connectors on the psu (blue) for the pci express power. 1 blue connector = 6+2 pin. So you would need 2 blue connectors to connect on your motherboard. However, you get 2 non modular pci express power with the 24pin and the 8pin.

Thank you very much for the replies Shakeel and BenIrvine93. Unfortunately, as I mentioned to Josh Pencheon, the Corsair HX650 doesn't have the blue 6 pin/6+2 pin power cables. I only have the PCI-E express splitter as shown and described above.

I think I will try to use this cable as advised.

Hello again. I'm just about to order Windows 7 and some cable clips etc. I've performed a preliminary boot to see if everything is ok. There seems to be two problems. Firstly, it did not seem to recognize a 'disk drive'. I'm assuming means I may of incorrectly installed the hard drive although it seems to be fine?

The second problem is that the heatsink's fan seems to be attempting to start itself before immediately turning itself off again. I've taken a picture of how it is positioned on the heatsink.

Picture1700.jpg

I'm thinking that the arrows indicate the correct direction for the airflow to pass out of the back of the case? The wires of the fan seem to be touching the heatsink. Is this a very bad idea? I've also made sure that I've correctly installed the fan to the cpu fan.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
