Hi all looking to put new graphic card into my machine i have a ati 5850 by sapphire was wondering whether to get another 5850 and crossfire it or buy a top endish single slot card also looking before xmas to put new cpu mem and motherboard in as well looking at intels new cpu e class ones that are coming out so what card would you guys use or do ?? cheers all
 
thought u guys where good ? well i run a 24" monitor max details if possible on all games at 1920x1200 that okay ?
 
I don't know whether you are aware that resolution dictates the need for GFX power. You mention nothing of your current computer specification. Nothing about your CPU or anything.

All these factors need to be taken into account. Or bottlenecking will occur. You ask for advice but offer nothing in terms of your current hardware situation other than you have a 5850 :p
 
yes a good comparrison site read that months ago its very useful thanks and yes i suppose your right but as i posted i will be putting a new mobo in so you can do the maths instead of nit picking no ??????
 
i will prob get one of the new re intel e class cpu and motherboard and memory and also put in a new 120 gb ssd and use one i have and put that in my wifes laptop and i run windows 7 64 bit

If you go CrossFire make sure the PCI-E slots on the new mobo are spaced far enough from each other so the top card can breath. I have the Asus P6T SE and my cards are sandwiched. One way around this is to not fasten the bottom card and let it lean at a slight angle. Makes a huge difference but not ideal.
 
yes seen that i hope the new graphics slots in new boards have allowed for this just have to wait i think i will prob just get another 5850 and use that for a while should run newer titles ie bf3 and mw2 when they come out
 
Just to summarise... You have a 5850 at the moment, and you want to crossfire it. The resolution you're playing on is 1920x1200.

You also plan on upgrading your current CPU, MB, RAM and SSD as well before Christmas, and hoping to upgrade to SB-E.

Well if that's the case, then the only thing that could bottleneck the system is your PSU. What model is it? If it's a reliable brand and enough wattage then you should be able to carry on using it if you do plan on crossfiring the 5850.

Although with that resolution I say it's best to go with a 570/580, or a 6950/6970. It might be even better to wait for the next generation cards as well seeing as they usually come out at the end of the year/early next year.

As easyrider mentioned though, if your CPU / RAM causes a bottleneck the 2nd card might not be of much use at all. Just something to be aware of.
 
Still no mention of his current spec :p

Xfire 5850's need cpu grunt in order for them to work at their full potential.

OP WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT SPEC?

Just had a look and most motherboards still have the two PCI-E just one slot apart. This is a very poor design for CF/SLI

I love the way this thread is going.

The OP won't give details of their current system so they can't be properly advised. Even if they plan on upgrading to Sandy Bridge-E that's several months away so they'll still have to use their old system in the meantime.

And now we have recommendations for S1366 motherboards.

Lol. Not a recommendation on that specific board, just pointing out the PCI-E spacing :-P
 
Sorry all had my in-laws around for dinner and it was a barbi my system specs are intel quad 6600 cpu asus mother board and 4 gig memery from crucial good mem as well and windows 7 pro and a 650 w seasonic psu all put into a nice coolermaster half x thts why i need a cpu/motherboard upgrade with the sata 6gb to make sure i have no bottlenecks the main reason i wish to crossfire my gpu i have is so its more cost effeciant then later on i will prob get a newer card what do you all think cheers for the help
