A new i5 System

Hi all,

I have a need to build a new PC as my kids are now taking over the old i5-2500 system. I already have an Nvidia 970 that I will take with me from the old PC and I'll give them my old graphics card.

So my system will be for gaming as well as Photoshop/Lightroom photo treatment.

It's been a while since I've built a system so I'm looking for any recommendations from you all.

I don't want to spend a fortune but I want something that is a really basic system, so probably based around a current i5.

Processor: Intel i5-6600
Motherboard: Asus Z170-Pro
Cooler: do I need a third party cooler?
Memory: 16GB
SSD:
HDD:
Case:

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hi

If you are going for a non 'k' cpu then a cheaper H110/H170/B150 chipset board would do fine.

You don't need a cooler as the i5 6500 comes with a stock Intel one. Some people like to put a cheap cooler on though as it will be quieter. Something like a Raijintek Themis.

Case is personal pref. I usually stick Phanteks, Fractal Design, NZXT and Corsair.

For the SSD something like a Samsung 750 EVO, Crucial MX300 or SK Hynix are good budget options.

If you are just looking for 1TB HDD then I like the WD Blue drives. Seagate are also fine.

Spend the extra £15 or £20 and get the 6600k. It's madness to pay £210 for a locked cpu. Then again Intels prices are just crazy anyway.

Ahh, I didn't know the difference with a K

In short: The clock multiplier on the 'K' processors is fully unlocked, allowing for very high overclocks (up to 5 GHz and above). On the 'non-K' versions, you may only change the turbo-mode multiplier which will allow for slightly higher clock rates when less than all 4 cores are active.

So I would add the K version.

5 ghz and above? You can certainly change the multi to 50x but actually having a working, stable OC at that frequency is going to be unattainable on the vast majority of chips.

Also, the non k i5s are £210+ now? That's an absolute confiscation of the urine.

No, he means they are taking the **** and I quite agree with him. Intels prices are disgusting and before anyone blames brexit they were already disgustingly high before that vote.
