A new modern SkyDrive..

surely these services and cloud based storage is secure, its illegal for copyright info to get out ?

Is this like saying skydrive cant be trusted with my data ?

Don't trust anyone to protect your sensitive data. Always encrypt pre-cloud.

Some people want extra protection. And the data won't be encrypted, but not is it accessible it hour being hacked.

There's. no point protecting 99.9% of files. It's just not needed. And I can't imagine that I would upload something that would require encryption. But if I did, I would encrypt those one or two files.

No point encrypting my films, music, photos etc.

hmm got a few docs which i guess would make sense to encrypt, just figured skydrive would be more or less 100% safe.

It's as secure as most services. Things aren't encrypted by default. Like emails aren't stored encrypted. Yet people are happy to send anything over them.

It's more people are naive than an issue with the system. Though the option would be great, but if you store something that needs encrypting, encrypt it. Many many options. The reality is mose stuff on cloud, doesn't need encrypting and would add overheads to encrypt everything, which is again pointless for most stuff.

Dropbox actually wrote a guide for using truecrypt to automatically encrypt stuff before sending, although I've never looked at it for skydrive stuff like BoxCryptor works just fine.

Still, credit where credit is due - this is an unusual improvement from ms :)

They need to get peer to peer PC folder sync integrated into SkyDrive, now that they've dumped Live Mesh.

Yep. Hopefully they won't leave these core apps and services to go stale over the coming months and years.

In regards to encryption adding overhead to cloud storage it really wouldn't if it was done correctly, as you would only be moving ciphertext back and forth and the encryption/decryption would be done client side.

nice ill check out boxcryptor :)

Is it possible to get SkyDirve to sync say my photos folder to the cloud without having to copy the folder into the skydrive folder first?

ie right click on photo's and sync to skydrive or set skydrive to upload the contents of the photo's folder and epriodically check for changes?

If not is there another service that does such as Amazon

You can do this by redirecting the photo library/folder entry in Windows to the skydrive folder although can't remember the details off the top of my head. Think I read it on Paul Thurrots winsupersite somewhere over the last couple of weeks.
