Hi guys,my problem is my mrs pc has died,so got to get a new one but not sure to get myself a new one and give her my old Dell or buy her a new pc.
My Dell is a 4600 Dimension,P4 3.06,7600GT,3gig ram,now I love games like Half life 2,Far cry etc which my machine runs very well,my mrs (and kids) just use the other pc for surfing and the odd game like Bejewled 2.Is there much life left in my pc?
I could afford to go up to £700 for a new pc but what do I look for? All this Core Due E6300.E2180,or HD4850 has confused the hell out of me.If I was to get a new pc for the mrs it would only have to be a low spec but for me its got to be man enough to play the latest games.Mafia 2,Far Cry 2 etc when they come out. Please help!!!!

ok,,looks like a new pc for me!!!!!,,only one more question,,,,,what do I get for £700? Its got to be pre built,,me and diy dont mix!,,,and must be an Intel,,,always had them and never had a problem. Thanks guys

Here's a good choice for your budget.

Choose the Antec Three Hundred and have a quad core rig for £670 which is a great overclocker. :)

Look at the OcUK systems, they are great value for money!

EDIT: Beaten to it, sarfs reccommendation is a great machine.

Q6600 + cheap GPU + 2gb ram for gaming .... LOL total mess, I would never buy a prebuilt o_O. Would rather pay someone 40-50quid to build it for me even if I couldnt do it.

It all depends if the op is comfortable getting an 'amateur' to build his rig for him. The OCUK systems are defo a lot better than high street retailers. And aren't a bad choice if not going to build it yourself

The system I linked is a very good budget gaming system at a fantastic price, far from a total mess.

It works very well and will also happily clock to 3.3Ghz stable. If you want any more info about our system range (OP), drop me an email and I'll discuss it with you.

Email in trust.

Sorry for off topic, but did you guys buy like 20 batches of those Q6600 and want to get rid of them ?

Why there is not a single system with any other CPU ?
I mean most of them are 'OK' but they could have been better to be honest.

I know that you need to make money and pre-builts is a good way to get rid of something you cant sell ( and lets be honest here ) but hey, you could make better range than just Q6600 with 3 diff types of GPUs + random parts that doesnt want to go elsewhere.

I've always recommending your pre-builts but recently looking, there are not many well-matched systems to be honest.

Its probably because the Q6600 is a great, cheap allround chip, and one of the most popular choices worldwide for this generation of processor.

ok thanks for the advice people, very tempted to go for the pc that Dr Sarf has recomended, thanks for that, however this morning I've been reading up on Intel v Athlons, now the feeling I get is Athlons are a little better for gamers than Intel. As I said earlier I've always had Intel chips but are Athlons that much better?Games aside I use my pc for dvd/cd burning, with my budget at £700 would it make that much difference to use a Athlon? I guess £700 is not much when it comes to fast pc's but thats all I got,one last question about my old Dell pc,could I upgrade the current P4 3.06 chip?If so what chip and how much?Sorry no idea what motherboard it is but its a Dell built Dimension 4600 4 years old.The only upgrades I've done is 7600gt card and 2gb ram. Thanks once again, any advice is welcome.

Intels are better when you overclock them and got some more money to spare.

Intel is the way to go at the moment. You'll get much better performance for your money. The P4 chip may be upgradable, but it depends what socket it is - if its 478 then you're pretty limited.

I think for the money and the budget you have, a new PC would be the way to go - the performance will be far greater than anything you can upgrade to.

If you order the system I highlighted, let me know your details and I'll build & overclock it for you.

Thanks for the offer dr.sarf,I'll bear that in mind. What ever I get my mind is made up about where I will get it,Overclockers! Dell do seem limited on there choice.

Phoenix UK,that is a nice sounding system you worked out for me,and very good value, what case would you,or anyone else recommend to fit it all in?

Don't forget though, building it yourself may save a few quid but a prebuilt system will be professionally built, ready to use when it arrives and supplied with full techncial support and warranty (on the complete system). Oh and clocked for you. ;)

i'd probably want a 4850 in it though tbh....its an amazing card for the price and should last a while.
and like already pointed out....stick with intel atm.

ok,,after much searching this is the system I think I will be getting;its a
Ultima Accelerator 4850

- Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
- Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI PCI-Express
- Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX
- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
- LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive
- OCZ StealthXStream 500w Silent ATX2 Power Supply
Antec 900 case
Windows XP Home Ed..
All for £792.
£90 over budget but I think,,,and hope its worth it.
I wont be overclocking it untill I'm sure I know what I'm doing, untill then is this spec good enough to play games like Supreme Commander,Crysis or COD 4?

The 'Thunder' system you recommended me dr sarf was fine but I have read that the HD4850 is,for the price, one of if not the best cards on the market.
