A new shiny forum

I think it's a great idea, I used to do loads of Kayaking, Scuba etc in my old job.

I've been thinking about taking it up as a hobby. I look forward to reading the threads.

LOL, Why not have this as a "Other Hobbies" forum such as for

Food
Books
Airsoft
Horse Riding
Skating
Magic
Painting & Sketching
Digital Arts
Swinging :p (kidding!)
etc

Than just sailing, it'll be dead as the Dodo here I think. I can name about like 2 people I know who actually been sailing and I know a lot of people! (some richer than Spie :p)

I'd envisage it being not just about sailing though.

There are a myriad of water-based sports and pastimes that could populate this sub-forum, time will tell.

Water based sports..... we see no mention of watersports (rarely a rowing thread) in sports arena

Spie, what was the inspiration for this addition?

I love how we campaign for years for a cooking forum, and as soon as Spie hears of it we get it (and a sailing forum, although I've never seen a single thread about sailing, lol) immediately.

I used to go sailing a lot when I was younger, mostly large yachts (70ft plus) and mostly offshore, even so far as getting my coastal skipper qualifications, but unfortunatly, time and money put an end to fun, and I've not done anything like it for years.. wish I'd done more really..

Still, one day, I'll sail off into the sunset.. one day..

I'd love to have a go on a proper yacht, especially offshore racing. Tried dingies (at uni) but never really got into them, just a bit boring really. Maybe in the future.

I have a Swift 400 Dingy in the shed, Used to get plenty of use on the canal at the bottom of my brothers garden till he sold the house. Bad times :(

She was a beauty and only £20!!!!

If we're having new forums, can we not have a cycling sub-forum in sports? the Big Bike Thread is massive, and the road cycling one, and there's loads of others little threads too.

Tempted to post all the superyachts I used to work on... :D Not really allowed though! :(

However, I love sailing, used to do it a lot - mainly for pleasure, but done a few yacht races. Having sailed across the Atlantic I have to say that's one of the most exciting adventures I have ever done and would suggest anyone vaguely interested in sailing to think about it! :)

Why is it not allowed?
And what did you do work wise on them, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Can we talk about kayaking here?!

And I do occasionally sail - hard to find the time atm though :(

Toppper Topaz and Lark (when I sail with my Dad) :p

It's the first time I've heard it.
Spie has taken this as an insult from his drones and has been whipping them as punishment since he discovered the food forum idea. I can't remember seeing you post at all Spie, but you have a pretty high post count. Will have to look through your posts now.

Signed a confidentiality agreement. Could possibly post some of the outside etc... but can't post any of the interior shots. As anyone can post pics of the outside really - but owing to some of the owner's high profile standing it could cause issues. Don't ask me why, I'm not a multi billionaire!

It was my old job - I used to work on superyachts for a company specialising in installing IT / Telcoms systems on these yachts - quite a niche market. It grew to doing general Entertainment systems too. IT was good fun, travelled around the world, spent most of my life living out of a suitcase - but very disruptive to my personal life, and work became my life. Also, you get an understanding of how the mega wealthy live. Owning a couple of Ferraris, and a few holiday homes around the world, is nothing compared to what these guys are about! I was spoilt, had lots of fun, but didn't have much of a life outside work. Can give you more info if you're interested of course. :)

Haha it's definitely interesting :) Is "Superyachts" the official term for them?
