A new Steam console ?

A lounge friendly pc.
Think they are a little deluded.
How about all the apps? How about all the media?
Unless it runs a version of android.

Modern consoles aren't just games and next gen consoles are oing to be even further from just a normal gaming console.

Linux. Valve are creating their own Linux distro.

Well, it being linux could be the solution the app and media issues in that you're able to run it as you would linux.
The thing it doesn't answer though is games.

Can't help but be concerned this could cost Valve, especially given the 1000's I have wrapped up in games on their "subscription" service.

Fair point. Linux is notoriously rubbish at games. So isn't running a games machine through Linux counterproductive?

Just running Linux won't cut it these days you need a properly implemented App Store and media purchase system. Be it apple store + iTunes, google play or Microsoft store + Xbox store.

Even samsung has its own media store and of course there TVs etc run plenty of apps.

Steam now sells software too, they just need to add software to it.
So, just add linux freeware software to the Steam store and solution is it not?

Software isn't apps.
And how much of steam games or software run on Linux.
And it's not just creating a wrapper to run on Linux. How about controls many pc games are not set up for console controls.

They have a huge amount of work if they want to compete with the big boys.

Can't imagine many games running on Linux natively.
But I disagree with your app concerns, seems a rather simple solution.

EDIT : Never had much issue at all with a game pad and PC games, (At least from this generation) they've all mainly worked fine with my Xbox 360 pad.

I don't know how they're going to do it, I'm sceptical.

They need apps to be created/ported or use a way to run android. Who's going to buy or need to run proper software for a longe "console" you need your typical App Store apps.
Where steam is just reselling conventional software ATM.
Again pretty much non of it design for lounge inviroment or controls.

I don't see the issue with the app's being ported and sold on Steam, I can't imagine that being a massive issue at all, given Steam's a proven platform.
I can't imagine them being too hard to port either.

Microsoft are getting by with a poor store at the moment.

But I don't know how they're going to do it, may's well wait and see.

There's no issue in porting them.
Ms are being slated for the store. Windows also isn't just a lounge console.
MS is also running hundreds of free programming venues for developers to come and create apps under supervision of MS programmers who can offer helpa HD assistance for free.
MS has also paid for many apps to be devloped.

So no there is very little similarity for steam and if ms is struggling on their budget and their market share, how are steam going to cope with a device wich is only lounge based.

Their argument about Xbox having major problems because you have to pay to go online compared to Sony,Nintendo and the new Valve console is a rubbish argument.
I had a PS3 for 2 months then sold it because their "free online play" was laggy as ****!
Went back to my 360,you get what you pay for if a company provides anything for free they can take their time to do anything about it when it has problems.

They don't really need to compete with a windows PC or a phone in terms of apps - just with a console, which wouldn't be hard to do really.

Games-wise, I guess it depends on them getting enough people to port to linux/android/etc.

As I said consoles are so much more than a game machine these days. Even consoles have those "phone & tablet" apps.

And the next generation will go down that path even more.

I see no reason at all to need an app ecosystem on a living room PC. I have W8 installed and have looked at the Windows Store possibly 2-3 times at most... it's pretty cruddy tbh. Steam already supports software distribution and sales which is more then ok no need for this 'App' nonsense.

I'm a little concerned about game uptake though if it is indeed on linux. However Valve must know something we do not and I have a sneaky suspicion what that could be. I am convinced that Sony's new console will be using native OpenGL and will not support DirectX which would completely change the landscape of home consoles and also make porting to linux steam much easier hence making the Valve home PC a much more viable looking venture.

Interesting times ahead.
