A Nice Camera

as has been said many times, an SLR is an investment - and the OP doesnt look like he's doing that. Just wants to buy a bloody camera and nothing else.

I also agree re the sticking a £4 macro filter or £60 telephoto - they will be crap, even compared to a £250 compact.

oh dear, what have i started lol.

A decent long zoom can be had for just over £100 in the shape of the sigma 75-300 APO or whatever it's called, hell, buy a 10D for UNDER £200 from ebay or something and a kit lens for £30 from the same place that's still near on budget and will still kick arse, then if you like, you can extend your hobby, if you don't you'll get more cash back for DSLR kit than you would a compact.

I'd honestly not be so confident a £59 telephoto would be noticeably better than a decent bridge camera.

I'd prefer to spend £60-£120 on a telephoto lens to see if I really need it than spend £500 on one and discover that I really don't use it enough to justify the price. For beginners I think that even telephotos within the £60-£120 range would kick the backside out of a PaS and Bridge camera anyday.

I think some people underestimate the quality a good bridge camera is capable of.

Not that Image Quality has anything to do with why I felt suggesting an SLR wasn't appropriate.

Aye.

Definitely if you dont wanna start spending too much, get a bridge, it covers the focal lengths, and is good quality.

For ~£250-300 i wouldnt start with a DSLR, as when starting into photography you dont go out knowing what you want to do with the camera for the rest of the time you own it, start with the bridge, and if you decide the route that you shoot, and feel limited, by all means move onto the DSLR route and get various lenses.

Compared to the DSLR, you could carry the Bridge (depends on which) in your pocket, or bag, but with the DSLR you'll need 3-4 lenses to cover the lengths, macro, telephoto, wide angle etc etc, so id start with a bridge for now.

Wooah, Thanks for all the replies, I'll have a slow read through whats been said in here and do a little googling, To see what I come up with. I'll post here and let you know which I end up with.

On a side note, Wez130, Are you Wez130 from the MPFS forums?

fuji 6500fd camera takes some really nice pics and the image quality/zoom are excellent.

when looking at zooms mate you want optical zoom not digital
ack!! you want IS which it doesnt have :(

As mentioned, something like the PowerShot G9 is worth considering (has IS, manual controls, RAW, even a hot shoe!). It would be a good platform to learn from, and if you later feel 'ready' for a DSLR then I'd say go for it. The suggested 400D is superb value at the moment, but I think it's overkill for what you've specified... besides it lacking IS at that price.

The Panasonic Lumix DMCFX500 has a reduced to almost no shutter lag (0.05 sec), it's the first compact to have next to no delay. You can get one for just over £250. HOWEVER! They're not even out yet, it's due out within the next couple of weeks.

3.0-inch Large LCD with Touch-Screen Interface. 25-125mm f/2.8 Leica lens - image stabilizer - 10.1 mega pixels

Taht looks like quite an interesting little beast! Even has a 2.5fps (3 shots) continuous drive and that's definitely something you wouldn't be finding in a lot of cameras (though things like the G9 have it).

ive just gone and bought ( few weeks back) ixus 70, its great for point and shot, quick and easy.
but i was considering the richo R7 or R8, its a great camera which points and shoots but with a great lens upto 200mm zoom which competes with my dslr
i carry both my dslr and ixus so for a quick shot i pull out the ixus.
