A Noob Question

With the release of Skylake, how long will it be before Intel stops producing Haswell stuff? Broadwell was a little confusing as well. Instead of upgrading to Skylake, I might go with Haswell as anything is better than the AMD platform I'm on right now. Are all the new i5 4690k's Broadwell or Haswell? This whole Broadwell thing has me a little confused.

4690 is a haswell chip, broadwell chip model numbers start with a 5. The 4690k is part of the haswell refresh known as devils canyon along with the 4790k. The original haswell k chips were the 4570k and 4770k.

Any idea how long they'll be around for until Intel completely phases them out for Skylake?

No idea tbh, but cant see them disappearing that quickly. Id wait though until skylake stock levels improve and prices drop to more normal levels.

Anyone's guess. Different foundries produce different chips. They'll ramp down production on some, to ramp up new chip production. But there'll already be a surplus of stock in retailer hands. Some foundries will continue to produce older stuff in lower volume until it's obsolete and then do it all over again with the newer chips. Intel also produces chips for others at some of it's foundries, such as Altera (who they actually just bought this year).

Intel and AMD have produced chips from the early to mid 70s, right up until the mid to late 00s.

I'm not sure if Skylake is something I really NEED right now. I don't use my PC for any high-end gaming or video editing. I think I'll be fine with Broadwell or Haswell.

With the plan I've got, I'll be upgrading to an i5 4690K in three months. I hope Haswell is still around by then.

The original haswell k chips were the 4570k and 4770k.

This should be 4670k and 4770k. Probably a typo by you but can easily confuse a person with lesser knowledge of these

They'll still be around a year from now. Also the second hand market is huge. So you'll be able to get a chip from anywhere.
