Hey all,

So i've been in IT for quite a few years, but have never really overclocked my own pc before, my current P4 2.8 (Northwood) has been clocked recently to 3.3 (alas it is limited by some rather dire memory).

So in order to make amends for this situation I've been doing a little research and taking some advise. I've been shopping and below is what will be landing on my desk on thursday. Feel free to add advise or critisism. I'll be popping in and out of the thread with questions and progress reports on how this Noob is getting on with his new setup.

First Dillema Vista or XP......

GeForce 7900 GS 512MB GDDR3

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 with a Tuniq Tower

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case

Enermax Liberty 500W ELT500AWT

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB ST3160811AS SATA-II 8MB Cache

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB ST3160811AS SATA-II 8MB Cache

Might as well go for bigger drive, £ per GB for 160GB is uneconomical, go for the 250GB or 320GB. £42 for 160GB, £61 for 250GB, £74 for 320GB.

160GB is palty nowadays.

I agree but it had to be done to bring the price inline with my max budget. That drive won't be in it for longer than 4 months before it gets dumped in to an external caddie and used for backups.

Speaking from experience, I would leave Vista alone for a bit. The drivers from Nvidia are still beta (last time I checked), the sound drivers for the mobo are still beta as are the NIC drivers. Of the few games I own, only a couple work.

I have both on for dual booting. I play my games in XP and do general computer use on vista - just because it looks soooo nice!

Thats a nice spec.

I would agree with tonyyeb here.I would dual boot with Vista and XP.

Glad to see you have gone for the Tuniq Tower as that mobo is a nice clocker and the 6300's clock well.

Good solid choice of PSU too.I have the 620w version and it happily handles my heavily overclocked system and 8800 GTX in silence. :D

The GS is also a nice card, clocks well and is a significant performance jump over the 7600 GT for not much more. ;)

As for the hard drive, well another one can be added at a later date so thats not a problem. It will be more than enough for OS install, games progs and data so wouldn't worry.

If you were working to a strict budget then its best to spend less on the component that can be easily upgraded.Another HDD can easily be added were as RAM or GFX card is more expensive to upgrade.

Glad you went for the faster Geil 6400 too.As although you could have saved a few quid on getting the cheaper 5300 stuff it would hinder your clock.

All in all a nice system.

Welcome to the forums and welcome to the world of the conroe :D

Easy

Not if you got your 7600GT for £88! £140 odd for the GS - £50+ = "not much more" :p

Hey all,

A little update, all the kit arrived today. I managed to get everything assembled at work no issues with any hardware(or boss ;) ) all working fine so far.

I'll install O/S tomorrow and will start gradually clocking it. I'll update with some results tomorrow.

Looking sweet,

Just squeezes in nicely. :p

You have a lot of hardware there with a great deal of overclocking headroom. :D

Just reading a thread in GFX card section and the card you have seemes to be a great clocker.

Here

I think you will be happy coming from a P4 2.8ghz PC :)
