hi guys, i have never done too much computer gaming and was hoping for a little advice here on the forum. i currently have an onboard graphics card. which came with the machine i ordered from here at overclockers, however recently i have recieved a DOTA 2 invite from a friend, only to find out my graphics card is not up to scratch.

i've never had to install a graphics card before and need this advice:

which graphics card should i purchase for DOTA2 ?
and secondly as i will be getting a new graphics card will i need a new power supply to fuel it.

i have provided a link to my current system incase any technical details are needed.

grab a 2nd hand 5750/5770 for about 30-40 ish off that auction site and enjoy. if you come to a point later where you start having stuttering issues then come back here and we can talk about upgrades from there. those cards will easily run dota2

DotA 2 Recommended System Requirements:

* OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
* Processor: Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz
* Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
* Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with Shader model 3.0. NVidia 7600, ATI X1600 or better
* Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
* Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

the 5750/5770 is are both far superior to those mentioned as the recommended

thanks for the advice lomez, however i'm after something which will have a bit of life to it,
and i am a bit wary of this 'stuttering' as i would only want to make 1 purchase...

good question mysticsniper, i wouldn't mind spending around £100 on the graphics card

and with my current system, would i need to purchase a new power supply?

I would advise you too get a new psu since the value one in that case i wouldnt trust a good branded one of the same wattage would do the job but may want to consider a 750w if you ever thing of going dual card. good make psu brands include XFX,Corsair,Seasonic,Antec and a few others. As for the card for that budget id be looking at this here

if your budget could stretch another 20 quid this is a very good card at the price point

but the stuttering i mention, is for higher end games. i used to play dual 5750's and could manage high settings on bf3 at 1680x1080 res pretty comfortably.

so i still think for you a 2nd hand model like a 5750/5770 will be the best bet and you could crossfire them which would beat both the above cards anyways and youll pick up a pair of those at 60-80 quid 2nd hand

you are quite right lomez, the power supply i had, actually blew up and i had to have overclockers replace it for me. luckily i still had a week left on my warranty :)

i will be going for the OcUK HD 6850 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

as you and beejjacobs both recommended it to me.

as for that powersupply beej, wouldn't a 430wat be a downgrade? or am i missing something here.

thanks for the advice!

YOUR BASKET
1 x OcUK HD 6850 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £89.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £39.98
Total : £141.07 (includes shipping : £9.25).

That'll do nicely :)

just to clarify before i order, will this be fine with my current system ? even tho i have a 500w psu the one beej has suggested is slightly lower and i am thinking it is a downgrade, some professional help would be much appriciated as to why this 430wat is better.

thanks guys!

The cards OK, but get this PSU instead,
