Hey all,

Looking for a PCI gfx card that supports Vista & Aero. I noticed the FX5200 and ATI 9250 being the most common PCI cards on sale at the moment but only the FX5200 has Vista drivers, ATI support for Vista starts at 9500 series so does anyone know if the 5200 supports Aero or any the model that is cheap?

Cheers!

There are GeForce 8400 GS and 8500 GT cards that come in a PCI flavour, there are also Radeon 2400 Pro and possibly 3450 PCI cards too. More commonly, there is also the GeForce 6200 PCI, and I think there's a Radeon X1550 PCI as well. I'd suggest searching google with a term like "geforce 6200 pci -e -express" to find them, as OcUK don't seem to stock them.

He needs PCI.

To be honest i don't think its worth the money. nVIDIA released some 6200 PCI graphics cards but i have no idea whether they support Aero at any reasonable speed.

I suggest to upgrade >_>

It's for a spare Dell D1100 PC so I don't intend on upgrading the tower really!

It's running Windows 7 RC at the moment very nicely, just no aero....!

If the GMA 950 can do Aero then the GeForce 6200 probably can. ;)

Just wondering, why does Vista require a dedicated graphics card to render the aero theme? All it is some transparency and shadows. An integrated chip shouldn't have problems with the flip view either.

Hmm, I've heard of hacks to enable Aero on otherwise unsupported hardware.

Well it uses Shader Model 2.0 to do the effects... The graphics card needs to support DirectX 9.0. The GMA 950 and above IGPs can do Aero.

Yeah I have an ATI 9250 as well so was a bit miffed at that!

I also have a Geforce "something" - think it's a 5500 But I cannot install it as it's an AGP card and the Dell does not have AGP slots !!!!!

FX5200 bid placed on eBay though yay!
