I wanted to upgrade when the standard Penryn's are released but can't really be bother to wait for 9 series, just going to buy a temp card till then.

Are there any motherboards which accept PCI-E 3.0 for the new cards coming next year?

Thanks.

PCIE 2.0 is only just coming in and any of the X38 boards support PCIE 2. If you want to future proof it a bit then if you pick the right one you will be able to put the Penrhyn 45 nm in and DDR3 RAM.

Yes pci 3.0 is just around the corner, will be out end of 2008 beginning 2009 and will not be backwards compatible the the max volts are only 3.3V, now Pcie 2.0 and previous are 5v

does this mean that investment in x38/pcie 2.0 now is unneccessary? stick with pcie 1.0 on p35 (with 45nm and 1600fsb support oced) , which will be fine for 9800gtx generation?

hmm good question.. t'would seem the logical answer.. but whats the point in bringing out such an advancement that will be obsolete in a year..

I may have got confused, thought the 9 series were 3.0, my bad.

Guess i'll post again once the penryn's are released.

Thanks anyway.

No, the following generation on cards will be pcie 2.0, probably after the 9xxx generarion and the R7xx generation, cards will change to the 3.0 specification
