Hi

Please help me i am suffering and in 6 months I have still been unable to get my PC running nicely

Puchased a PAQt 5U case acoustically treated who also supplied a Seasonic s12 650w PSU, Xigmatec s1284 with 2 x 120mm 1000RPM fans on the heatsyng. The case has 3 x 120mm fans mid chassis. (www.paqt.co.uk).

The following kit was purchased from OC's March 2009 :

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
EVGA Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Gold (3x2GB) Triple Channel DDR3 (OCZ3G1600LV6GK)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 - OEM (E85-05683)
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Other components attached

Hard drives x 4 (WD Raptor 150gb & 3 xSamung 250 HDs)
RME Fireface 800 Audio Interface
Unitor serial midi interface + other midi kit

Primary use is for Audio/Video recording hence the silent case/kit.

Bios upgraded to latest E758SZ2P and motherboard recently RMA'd

The issue I have is setting the bios correctly as i am getting, what I think, is high CPU temperatures and the configuration for the motherboard and its components.

I ideally want the RAM running at 1600mhz which is the factory speed of the and not really fussed about overclocking.

However, on the 1st build booted straight up and the CPU was clocking 3400mhz and RAM 1066. (Temperature was 50+ and each core between 65-70) - all centigrade!

Reset PC and set default bios which then lowered CPU to 2800 and ram to 1600.

I have been advised on the OCZ forum that the settings for RAM should be :

2:12 8/8/8/24/88/2T Dimm 1.65V QPI 1.35v

Everything else i have left to auto.

At the moment the RAM is set at 1600mhz and the CPU running at 2653mhz... this doesnt seem right?

Basically I need some expert advivce to get the rig running stable. Have used OCCT which blasts to 90*c after 5 mins and stops!

I have attached of the current settings and timings.

I really do not understand a lot of what I am doing and need a solution.

Hoping some people can help. I have had various conflicting advice re settings and am concerned what us right and what I should do.

I know each rig is different but I am not really looking to overclock, unless the temperatures are lowish.

I have used Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound from OC on the base of the cooler and is pretty thinly spread and have 100% isopropyl alcohol to clean if needed to remount. But I have done this several times and still get similar temperatures.

I am wondering if the memory should be run at 1600mhz, however this rate was highly recommendedfor running some of the sample audio streaming applications installed.

The graphics card is mounted on the first slot nearest the cooler but could be moved down, however, I was trying to keep it further away from the PSU fan which blows on the card.

I really need some solid advice on all correct bios settings, i know its a lot to ask but I from reading around it appears that the RAM and CPU are tied in on voltage and speeds etc.

Please help me...it is much appreciated Thanks in advance.

PS Sorry for the squishy JPEG I have limited photo software (infraview and paint) Give me audio and am a whizz..

I am confused and lost

Firstly if u dont want to overclock reset ur bios to default. Also u cant have the motherboard voltage settings running on auto as thats is why u are seeing the high temps. Also ur ram is running at 1.68 v which is more than u should use (so if u have set it to 1.65 drop to 1.6 at the max (always run ur memory at its rated settings). Ur system ur using will however have no need for any of this so my best advice is to drop the cpu frequency down to its rated level and then keep lowering the cpu voltage till u get acceptable temps.

Reason i say this is that the tasks ur wanted to do with the system ur using is more than capable of running anything u throw at it. However if u want to get into overclocking read as many overclocking guides for the core i7 they will be able to give u a very detailed info specific to ur system.

Btw also a note to a new overclocker remenber if ur settings are bad and ur system wont boot just remove the battery from the mb. Hopefully that should set ur system for the default settings of ur chip then just simply go under ur memory and set it to 1600. However if ur cpu still isnt right change the QPI just back to its default. However i havent had a chance to purchase my i7 system yet so can't give u exact information.

Thanks for the reply.

6gb is in preperation to goto Windows7 64bit currently not ll the applications/hardware has the support but is definately in the pipeline (waiting game).

The comment regarding default settings and 1.68v of ram is part of why I am asking for help.

The ram is set to 1.65v in the boot up bios screen. But it is reporting as higher. When i set everything to default I am getting only 1066mhz clock speeds for ram and cpu will run higher!?

Like I say i don't understand overclocking but i do want to get the RAM running at the speed it was intended for.

Hope this helps clarify those details.

So leave everything to auto including voltages and 8/8/8/24/88/2t settings and you are saying set the memomory divider to 2:12 1600mhz?

Sounds to simple to be true!??? Anyone else?

You should adjust your VDimm to whatever your RAM is rated at, I'm guessing 1.65v for 1600MHz?

If that isn't stable you might need to raise QPI/Vtt as well.

Does your RAM have XMP profiles?

If so, just enable XMP and then it will run at 1600MHz without any tinkering.

Though it's always better to do it manually. :)

So far so good and thanks the RAM is set to 1.65v with 2:12 1600 8/8/8/24/88/2t.

The temperature of cpu is 29-31*c idle with the cores running at 45-47*c so seems much better.

The cpu is auto settings and giving 2800mhz which I am happy with to be honest.

One issue was the case having a front door panel. This has been left open to improve case airflow for the front vents.

The major issue was the prvious motherboard and as RMA'd the new one seems stable and I believe the old one had issues with the ram sockets.

If the idle speeds appear to high let me know.

The Vreg is about 65-72*c and I believe if i move the graphics card to the 2nd slot this will help airflow as there is not a lot of room between the cpu cooler and gfx card. Although I understand vreg @ 60*+ is normal and can tolerate upto 105*c on occassion (I am slowly learning).

Must admit the tempation is to ramp cpu to 3000mhz+ but for now I am happy.

With regards to 64bit it has always been my intention to upgrade to this when W7 is released and I do have a legit key. There are 2 external hardware devices which do not or will not load drivers even in legacy mode, however, I understand the manufacturers are due to release...fingers 'x'.

Thanks for advice so far....any more suggestions most welcome :)
