A friend of mine (no not me!) bought a Ford Fiesta 96 1.3 and We've noticed a few problems and hes wondering just how to much to fix;

* Exust is blowing sounds like coming before the back box
* A MOUNTAIN of blue smoke CONTINUALLY coming out, more so when gas applied
* 1 uk gallon of oil (the recomended grade) for every 700 miles!
* The Leads have a chacky material coming out of them onto the spark plugs
* Theres fresh oil around the tappet cover
* Loud tappet noise even when correctly ajusted
* Oil plus white gunk in the air filter

Oh and he thinks it doesnt burn oil please tell him i'm right and it had and does!

LOL are you serious is there no cheap fixes? Wha is likely to be wrong with it?

And im guessing he should have spent £1k on this car..

I'll tell you what's wrong with it - it's knackered. My Sierra with knackered rings used to do in a gallon of your finest Motorway 20/50 every week (500 miles)

Is it worth getting a recon/working engine or just try again on another car? (and this time someone will go with him!)

All depends on how cheap you can get a second hand engine.

And with the engine in its current condition its not worth more than scrap value.

So if you can get another engine fitted then it wont be that bad.

See what price you can get it done for. You'd probably be looking at around £500 all in. At work last year some time we supplied and fitted a decent second hand 1.3 engine that had done around 70,000 miles to an Escort van for about £450 all in iirc. That would be the same engine in your mates Fiesta I should think.

It's a '96 fester, throw it away and get another one. You can get a whole car for not much more than paying out for a 3rd party to do an engine swap.
