...where by my PC wont boot up.

POSTs with no problems, where the harddrive would usually kick in it doesn't, although to touch, you can feel that its on. I have tried a brand new SATA cable. reseated the power and data cables, removed my fairly modest overclock, reset CMOS, swapped RAM and given it a little kick.

Any ideas what it might be? I dont have any spare hardware to test individual components, but last night i was on the interwebz and a bit of FPS gaming no problems, shut down as normal and mains switched off overnight.

Spec:

QX6700 @ 3.1Ghz
Gigabyte P35-DS4
2x2Gb OCZ Gold DDR2
Gigabyte GTX 560ti OC
250gb Hitachi Deskstar 7200
750w PSU
Win 7 Home P

Please any ideas?

When you say POSTs with no problem, do you get as far as the windows load. If so then follow Ch3m1c4l's advice with the repair.

Otherwise identify the manufacturer of your hard drive and download the diagnostics tool from their website. These are live CDs so you can verify the disk integrity outside of windows. Perform a long scan. Any problems will certainly cause you stability problems when the OS loads.

Thanks guys, i will try repair when i get back from town. The thing is the screen just stays black after the BIO~S splash and after it goes past verifying the DMI data pool/PCI checks or whatever and at the point right after that where Windows would usually kick in its animation.

I didn't think it would be likely that it would be the OS as it shut down no probs and has been like a rock, only a fresh install about two weeks ago too, with little installed.

Do you think Ultimate Boot disk will help? I ask as i have it.

Thanks again :)

ultimate boot disc will be another way to run some hard drive checks. Its probably just a file has corrupted somewhere or something. Which is common (ish) and a simple fix.
My personal laptop has had a nice problem that I havent got round to fixing for 6 months (got a better work laptop instead) where it will do all the animation, but where it should load the login screen it stays black (lit up, but black). It will load my vista ult 64 DVD after like 30 minutes, but that wont let me do a startup repair as its a diff version to on the laptop, and the dell DVD of vista wont load, just sits on teh colorful screen where it should ask me what I want to do (left it for 48 hours lol)

So, hopefully, yours will be a simple fix, but there are plenty more things to try if it doesnt work.

if it didnt, then it would say that ther eis no boot device, press ctrl alt del to continue or restart and insert proper boot media etc.

Well its working now, did a repair on it. Strange this though it appeared in BIOS but running diags from ultimate boot it could not be found at all. All it saw was my DVD drive

When i use speedfan to check drive it gives me 98/98 which says is fine.

I think it may be on its way out. Oh well its a good excuse to get a SSD next week, if not sooner.

the HDD is quite noisy, i'm wondering whether its seen better days

maybe, but then again, maybe not. Data does randomly corrupt or things change some boot settings in strange ways, or if windows is updating and your pc crashes/you turn it off via the power button it cna cause all kind of problems.
