My system has been working excellentlyish (apart from firefox/shockwave freezes from time to time) until the past few days. It randomly shutdown in such a manner as I would have assumed overheating. However, nothing has changed (hardware wise) and the temperatures seem...excellent...this has happened again two or three times since.

That said, I have always had a strange phenomenon since I built the system, whereby when I shutdown windows, almost everything shuts down (including hdd), but the motherboard and fans stay alive, and I have to switch mains power off. No startup problems, as Windows has powered down properly...wierd, but it seemed to cause no harm so I learned to live with it.

With this new problem, I'm thinking something else is at play. Could it be faulty mb connections, or perhaps fault case wires?

How can I test? I have exams soon and really can't afford huge down time!

Thanks

8 GB DDR3 @ 802MHz (9-9-9-24)........(I think crucial from 'memory'..geddit?)
465GB Western Digital WDC WD5003ABYX-01WERA1 (SATA)
111GB Crucial_CT120M500SSD1 (SSD)

Also, I should say, given the environment, no overclocking has been performed. (I know it's a great chip to oc, but I have much studying to do instead!)

Edit: P.s. Thanks in advance for any help. Much obliged.

Check the event logs for issues windows picks up... you could run checkdisk and memory tests also.. could be a psu related what psu do you have ?

"If in doubt; give it a clout!"

Or check your PSU. What is the PSU btw? Sounds like a duff unit or a bad connection. I'd re-seat everything ( and check the back of the motherboard to make sure there's nothing shorting it out too.

Failing that, do you have access to another known working PSU you could try?
