A question about Affinity.

Hi all,

I have a quad core and recently I've been trying to one specific game to run smoothly, I've asked about it on its own forum and the answer I was given makes me a bit twitchy. I'm the kind of person who nurses their rig and doesnt like to do anything crazy to it (hell I practically live and die by the temp reading on my gpu :S) Anyway, I was told that setting this game to run on a single core would fix the problem I was having.

So my question is, when running a multicore processor, is it in anyway harmful to change the affinity of a program to run on a single core?

Thanks in advance.

Peace.

Just a thought, but don't Intel quads tend to rotate the load over cores for thermal balancing? That may be a total lie but I'm sure I read it somewhere :)

In either case, as long as your cooling is working properly there's no reason it should cause an issue. If you were right on the edge of your cooling capacity, maybe possibly then you'd have problems?

You might want to mention the game you're having issues running.

More likely to get people who've had similar issues or know workarounds for the performance for it.

The game is Kerbal Space Program but I had already been given a suggestion on how to make it run smoothly without crashing. It's the suggestion that I needed advice on, being is it safe to force it to run on a single core when I have a quad core.
