A question for people playing at 60hz with good hardware.

I've recently just come from a 120hz BenQ (1080p) monitor to a 21:9 (2560x1080) monitor (60HZ).

I have a R9 290 FYI at the moment.

With my 120Hz monitor I don't think I ever had vsync on, I just played away and it was all good.

With my new monitor I have this issue -

I can either leave vsync off and have screen tearing or I can have vsync on (be locked to 60fps) and have slight input lag.

It then got me thinking for those of us with powerful GPUs - what's the point in getting well over 60fps if we lock to 60 with vsync?

My new monitor is great, I love it and the IPS colours etc look awesome - don't get me wrong.

It's just got me thinking that's all.....

I picked up one of the Dells 21:9 (would do 75Hz reliably) but it still wasn't good enough for me even at 75Hz the input lag was too much with vsync and I couldn't get a reduction in the perception of tearing with vsync off like I can with a 120Hz panel and capping at a higher framerate.

And now I've ended up on a gsync panel and despite the issues if/when the framerate drops below 30 I'm not looking back.

Did you return the Dell or?

Main reason, at least for myself, to keep high minimum FPS, very handy for when you do use vsync.

Personally I can't stand screen tearing so use vsync on everything and honestly can't say I notice input lag at all, even when playing BF 4 MP, I do just as well as I would with it turned off.

Although when I use vsync, I either:

- use borderless windowed mode so that windows vsync + triple buffering is used

or

- set FPS cap to 59.94 in a user config file and turn vsync on in game (this is what I have done in bf 4 although I have turned triple buffering off), BF 4 with mantle and this runs soooooooooo smooth

One my main things I didn't like about my IPS 60hz monitors for gaming was not the input lag or tearing or shuttering.

But the burry/ghosting screen you get when moving or spinning around fast (mainly when am playing FPS games )

I noticed Alien isolation had quite a bit of input lag. I downloaded Radeon Pro and enable triple buffering and it seems to make it a lot better.

I mustn't be sensitive to input lag then as I can't notice it in that game either :p

I am using borderless windowed mode though so get triple buffering as well...

The only game lately where I can say that I felt massive input lag was the vanishing of ethan carter.

+10000000000000

That is really the only thing I want to be improved massively with IPS, it is "fine" but certainly not "good" imo, although I am very sensitive to motion clarity.

If you want good colour quality, you have to sacrifice GtG response time.
If you want good GtG response time (= less motion blur), then you sacrifice colour quality.

It depends mostly what type of games you play. I personally hate motion blur, especially in ARPG's (environment goes all blurry whenever you move your character), which is why I opted for a 144Hz gaming monitor with decent response time.

Also as a side note, I have never experienced input lag with v-sync enabled, so I'm always really confused when people bring it up. I mean, I play games like LoL and don't notice any input lag at all with vsync enabled, or any game for that matter. It must affect competitive FPS players only or something?

I've never played LoL but I notice it in games like eve online, any FPS game and third person MMOs.

I did spend almost a decade playing Quake 2/3 competitively though.

Not all games (or engines actually) will suffer from equal amounts of tearing. I opt for IPS & screen tearing over input lag or bad viewing angles/poor colour.

I wish I was one of the people that didn't notice input lag but I really can't stand it. Maybe playing with a controller I don't notice it AS MUCH but its definitely there & definitely (to me) an unusable option...
