A question for sim racers!

Okay heres the problem:
My very old, very small and uncomfortable seat has finally given up and is now officially retired. This means I now have no chair to sit and race in. (Other than the chair with wheels, but thats no use because pressing the clutch and brake at the same time causes me to move back three inches!).

I've been considering buying an old/used race seat. (I was actually considering getting a cheap seat from something like a vectra/astra ect. ect., but looking at the cost, I might aswell get a cheap Cobra style seat?) I think a used Cobra seat is going to set me back about £50+. Then I'll mount it on a box about 30cm high and I think I ought to be looking at a decent set-up?

Are there any alternative seats I ought to consider? I'm not too fussed about style. Just something that doesn't move, gives me a decent driving position and is pretty cost effective!

Any advice/general comments appreciated! (also links to guides you might've found on the web would be nice!)

Final thing, has anyone tried mounting the G25 pedals in the upside-down config? Is it easy enough to do?

Thanks,
p0ss3s3d

(EDIT: Final idea - buy a joystick with a single axis (is there one?) and use it as a handbrake (can you use multiple controllers on rFactor, LFS, GTR or iRacing?).

You can use multiple controllers in rF, GTR2 (can't remember if I tried iRacing). Trouble with GTR2 is it will only see the first 3 and I never found a way of getting Windows to see the right devices as the first 3. I had Yoke & Rudder pedels as well as Wheel and Racing Pedels. I was therefore forever swapping controllers.

For your handbrake you could use a standard joystick. Stick it in a box so it can only move is one direction.

As for the seat I've no ideas really. I managed to scrounge a drivers seat from an Impreza that was being stripped out to go racing. It came complete with the runners which I mounted on a 2"x2" frame so I could still slide the seat back and forth. Great if different sized people visit and want to have a go.

Thanks for the feeback.

I've decided to buy the Logitech attack 3 for a handbrake and I'll build myself a wooden box to restrict the movements. That should be here by the weekend & once I've got it set-up I'm going to buy an old handbrake and mod it (I think I have a plan for that)

As for the seat, I'm going to simply buy one and mount it onto a box. (wooden box? for added weight), what would be the best method of fixing the seat to the box? (I'm either buying an old 147 seat or a simple unbranded bucket seat)

Then I'll look at the reversed pedals, nixim brake mod and extra shifter resistance next week.

I have mounted a seat to a home made box for sim racing I will take some photos later tonight, when the kids have gone to bed.
It works very well & is easy to do.

You can mount the G25 pedals upside down. You can even take them apart and mount each pedal where ever you want. Logitech will never know you took them apart if you are concerned about warranties.

As for seats, i've just scrapped a small family car (mazda 323f) and the seats were very comfy. You could have had them for free as well. :(

I place door wedges behind two of the wheels on my office chair, works a treat.

But I do plan on getting a race seat at some point in the near future.

The Base box - sides are made of old floorboards the top is chipboard the underside is plywood, all screwed & glued together.
The small casterwheels do not move when you are sat in the chair as the base & your own weight keeps it from moving, the smaller the wheels the better.
They are ment for armchairs so can take the weight.

Car seat - bolted two pieces of wood to the underside of the seat (running from back to the front) where the car runners would have bolted to if still in a car, I then screwed the two pieces of wood to the base.

I then put a piece a wood between the seat & base at the back running from the left to right, this is so I can tilt the seat forward otherwise I was sitting to slouched & gave me tummy ache.

Tarting up - Added some wood on the underside to hide the wheels when viewing from the side (stops kids getting the fingers run over) covered in black vinyl just need to paint the wood black forgot I had not done that till I saw it tonight.

The tricky bit is working out how high to make the seat from the ground as you want to be in a good driving position then the hight of your desk then the hight of the pedals.

I am very happy the way it worked out I was a bit jammy plus had all parts at hand only thing I needed to buy was the seat, vinly & wheels.

Hope the above made sence

& a pic of my setup would be rude not to, see what you can fit under the stairs.

pretty cool garsands.

@ possesed

never had a problem with my seat moving...try sitting in a lower position also giving the chair a little wiggle so the wheels are set to go side to side, not forward and backwards.

Thanks for that. Looks great!!

So you've got the chair on some wood bolted to the base of the seat (I guess the holes in the seat would be pre drilled for installation into a car anyway?

Then you've put that on the box... cool!

I'll try to create some sort of build log when I get around to it.

...we will see.

I was thinking today, why has nobody written a program for ffb joysticks that links the FFB to the clutch and eventually to the actual game. I.e you can lift and shift in a racing car, but often far too dmuch resitance to do that in a road car, so program it so you have to actually engage the clutch to shift (you might even get a little feel of bite through the stick?) .

Or program it so that when your in 5th and shifting to 4th but accidentally try to put it in second you get that shakey/tough resistance.

Another thing, why not try FFB for brake pedals. I know I can sort out the resistance quite easily, but now I want to add some sort of motor to the pedal so you feel that. Same with the clutch it would be great to feel some sort of bite point.

"Dear Logitech Man,

Make some FFB pedals and shifter to go with the G29. Make it work with rFactor 2, iRacing and LFS, so the feedback is fully realistic. Then I will be intouch again to get you to make a good motion simulator.

Thanks,
p0ss3s3d"

:p

Then get yourself a set of these

http://www.fanatec.de/webshop/new_eu/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=68&osCsid=aec5703c52ee5704906b49835ebed70a

You can also buy a spring set to change how hard the pedals feel to press.

They are the ones I use only thing is iRacing does not support the ffb on the brake yet.
Someone has make a addon to make it work with iRacing but it does not work if you use the wheel that I use.
Some cars in iRacing will not let you drop down from 5th to 2nd gear, same as the resistance when trying to change gear with out using the clutch some cars will not let you change gear without using the clutch depends on what settings you use.
But iRacing is more hardcore racing game then others.

I'm pretty sure a few years back I saw something where you could program up a Microsoft FFB joystick to act as though it's an H-gated gear lever and to restrict the movement, as well as provide some resistance to "put" it into gear.

Can't for the life of me remember it, now, unfortunately.

FFshifter?

I've read about it. So far it seems nobody has intergrated the shifter with feedback/resistance. Even FREX.

And as far as I know, they are the only ones to have implemented the feel of the bit point. (FREX clutch+).

But I can't afford FREX stuff. So I'm going to either buy their vibrake thing and fit it to the G25 pedals or I'll opt for the fanatec set. (I think I'll go for the FREX offering since I've just built my reverse mounted pedal board- just need to do the pedals!)
