A question for the lorry drivers

Tehehe R124/LA420 nice story, serves them right, hopefully they will learn from their experience but I doubt it.

It's obvious isnt it? The more common the practice of leaving doors open on empty trailers become the more obvious full trailers are to theives!

I hardly think keeping the doors open makes it stick out more . Lorries generally stick out quite a bit anyway given there size and all. It's better than having the side curtain slashed up for the theives to actually see there is nothing worth while taking leaving you with a truck to repair. So instead if you don't have a precious load it makes more sense to keep the doors open to show the theiving scum there is nothing worth taking.

Saves the truck getting vandalised for nothing.

Except that this has always been done. As I say, thieves cut curtains even on a trailer with the back doors open, so its a pretty pointless exercise regardless.

Ultimately, if you park up, take reasonable measures to advertise to mr scumbag that the trailer is empty i.e. leaving the doors open, then your in the clear as a driver for any subsequent damage, the boss is the first to moan if you park up and don't open the trailer doors & it gets subsequently knifed.

Can't win either way tbh.

What? It doesn't make the lorry to stick out to us but if you are Mr Lorry Theif walking along a line of trucks at 4am, 5 of which have open doors and 1 of which doesn't, which one sticks out as the one to rob!

Hahaha!

You didn't kill them did you ;)

No, only ran the reefer for about 40 minutes of a 2 hour journey, it was enough to turn them both White. :D

Unless I am loaded to my back doors & its raining, I leave my back door open loaded or empty, as a damage avoidance exercise.

As I say, chances are they will slash all 5 trailers (but trying it @ 5PM would result in 3 or 4 drivers kicking the thieves heads in ;) ) - such visits happen in the wee small hours.....

Think about it. If the door is open they can see there is nothing worthwhile. If it's closed they have to vandalise the curtain to take a look in. There is a perfectly logical reason why they do this and I can't see why you're having trouble to understand

The doors are hardly going to be open on a fully laden trailer are they now.

Don't you roll the curtains up aswell?

In high winds, yes, you may losen the front of the curtain so they can see inside if they wish, but, the thing flaps about all night making a racket, so you tend not to.

Like this...

Was going to say when we had those bad winds few months back 90% of trailers I saw on the Motorway had the rolled up curtains as those without would simply blow over

Random Q - What do you have in the cabin to amuse yourself (within the context that can be talked about on a family forum)? When parked up do you just go to whatever local boozer there is or do you have TV/mobile broadband/special doll to keep yourself amused in the truck?
Always wondered if its a lonly life being a trucker

Not sure he'd be touching any drink, I have a feeling it's strictly against policy. Even when parked up for the night??

Also I've seen a few with TV's built in what have you.

Quite right, however, the wind can still take you over with the curtains tied back! - chances of this happening are greatly reduced mind.

An empty trailer with the curtains closed (no matter how tight) is like pulling a giant sail, with predictable consequences in gusts of wind!

I'm not having trouble understanding - I know why they do it I just beleive they are shortsighted in doing so, becuase in the long term it will do more harm than good.

The doors are hardly going to be open on a fully laden trailer are they now.

Congratulations! You've grasped it! So what does it mean if you are a theif and you spot 6 trucks 1 of which has all its doors closed? Whats in the truck?

Over time, having a door closed will begin to have a similar effect to a huge neon flashing sign mounted on the roof saying 'This trailer is full of lewt!'

Plenty of books, portable DVD player, 100 odd films (not porn!) MP3 player, kettle, teabags etc A nice diesel operated heater and a comfy bunk to sleep on! :D

Drinky is a no no.

Yeah I was wondering the legal implications of sleeping in the cabin after a few beers.
