A question for the tattoed folk

I have had an idea for my next tattoo after an experience last month and have been doing a bit of research into finding the most suitable tattooist to do it.

What I want is an image of the earth as viewed from space with a black space scape behind it. I also want some other particular details in there such as a person floating above the earth, looking down on it, being the main one.

Most space/earth related tattoos I have seen have looked what can only be described as cartoon-ish. I'm looking for as close to photo realism as is possible with tattooing and this is where I'm hitting a brick wall. Finding a tattooist with something like this in their portfolio is proving difficult.

Can anyone make any suggestions or point me in the direction of somewhere?

Also, I'd like to see what they're going to do before it's inked on me. My last few tattoo's were freehanded which was fine for them but this one is important, and big (most of my upper left arm) so I want to be 100% on it. Are the tattooists likely to sketch it out exactly as they plan to do it or will they do a rough drawing before breaking out the needles?

Thanks!

I have considered your idea and done a quick mock up for you. £1500 please ;)

How about something like this? :p

Not far off Leon! Apart from the spam cans of course! :p

I thought there were quite a few tattoo enthusiasts on here. Obviously not.

i'd suggest googling for some tattoo forums, you'll get people more in the know than you will here with less spammage too.

well hitman leon pretty much sums it up

as for the design then i know nasa have spacewalk images 'similar' to what you want so find one and then show it to the tatooist and explain exactly what you want changing

cant advise on which tatooist to use but you should be able to find ones capable of doing it. i cant see it being different than some of the other complicated high detail stuff they do.

most decent tattooists will sit with you and work on your ideas, your best bet is to get a specialist tattooist, who deals with portrait/realism tattooing, and work on a piece until your both happy with the final product.

as for the process itll be carboned onto the skin then tattooed.

Trouble with recommending a tattooist is that it's an aquired taste. All the tattooists are different and since what you're after is unusual (in that you can't find any decent existing examples) it'll be difficult to recommend a place that's better suited than anywhere else.

For instance, for high detailed work, i'd instantly recommend The Family Business of whom i'm a huge fan and great admirer... but that doesn't mean they'd be the ideal choice for yours (although Andrea migh be somewhere along the right lines).

Sorry mate, wish i could be more help.

There's a pretty good tattoo festival on in Bridgwater every year, but I can't remember quite when. Just don't actually get tattooed there - the guys don't seem to care that much if it goes a bit off, but that could just be the ones I saw working. As mentioned, the black background is gonna but a clinch on the whole thing, and it's unlikely to hold true for long even if it heals well. Your best get is to check round a few places and ask them to do you a mockup, but you'll have to pay for their time. Are you set on this space course?
