This is for my brothers friend... He needs a mobo and CPU.

The mobo must be AGP Compatible (he's been silly enough to go out and buy himself an AGP card - nvidia 6800 - a few weeks ago despite upgrading now)

Also, he'll be using DDR (not DDR2) RAM, he can't afford to upgrade to DDR2.

He wants to spend about £250, probably, on an upgrade. I guess all it needs to cover is the mobo and CPU, as it doesn't seem like he wants to replace anything else.

My brother *might* be able to push him to upgrade other bits... I think he needs to get onto DDR2 RAM most importantly... are there mobos with DDR2 and AGP support? Would he be able to get that without going much over £250?

I dunno... I'm unsure what to advise, so any help would be great :)

Probably get the ASRock 939 DualSata2, this has an AGP port and a PCI-e. Coupled with a 3000 Venice. This would come in under £100 :)

But if he wants to spend around £250, then maybe a 3800 X2 ?

Nope, plenty of people using this mobo, no performance problems at all, a solid clocker too after a simple V-mod, plus it supports AM2 + DDR2 too with the optional upgrade board. Built 2 machines with this mobo for my friends with no probs at all.

Optional upgrade board? What's that? And does it come with the mobo or is it a seperate purchase?

By default, without this upgrade board, does it support DDR?

Yeah it supports DDR by default. The board for am2 you have to purchase seperately, although I haven't seen any retailers stock it.

Okay well my brother's just come across this weird multi-mobo :D

"ASROCK 775Dual-VSTA"
http://www.asrock.com/product/775Dual-VSTA.htm

That's only £40 ..? On another website, someone's reviewed it with an E6400 and given it 5/5 (amateur customer review) ... so it obviously works. But the price makes me a bit skeptical of it! I wouldn't expect it to be a good over clocker..?

It supports DDR and DDR2, and coupled with an E6300 it would be under £200 - and he could keep his DDR ram and gfx card, right? Or does C2D only support DDR2 and not DDR?

edit: Oh and also, would a stock-clocked E6300 work well in games, such as Rome Total War and Half Life 2? Or is it only good if you o/c it?

Thanks :D

It's a decent board, does what it says on the tin but lacks in the overclocking department. Look here for more info. I'd recommend that route over socket 939.

Alright, well sorted then. Looks like we're gonna get him to buy:

775DUAL-VSTA
E6300
1GB DDR2 667Mhz

And then he can keep his AGP GFX card :) Sorted.. Cheers for the help :)
