Can any 2 cards of the same model be crossfired?

Example:

Sapphire 1gb HD5850 and an Asus 1gb HD5850

or do the have to be identical?

I appreciate the same model looks better... lol.

Yes.

No.

You can even have 5850+5870/5970 Crossfire, any combination will work.

Can't be done in sli though they need to be the same eg 570 1GB+ 570 2Gb won't work unless you hack the drivers.
 
If one was a 2gb and the other a 1gb, the 2gb would only use 1gb vram...

Yes, but if you could get a 2GB cheaper than a 1 Gb for whatever reason, you would put the 2GB in the top slot and use it in games that are not Crossfire friendly or until Crossfire is enabled in the driver eg Rage.;)
