I have a job interview on friday and if I get it I want to build a new computer once i've saved up enough money. I'm looking to spend about £1k, maybe more cause I want a 19" moniter aswell. It'll mostly be used for gaming and the odd bit of paper work/web browsing.
The thing is, what cpu would be best? I know the 3700+ SD is considered and old chip now but it's still good. How would a 3800+ X2 match up against it, or even one of the opteron's?

What other components would you fine people suggest? I like the look of the Epox motherboards but they're always out of stock. The graphic card will either be something like a 7800GT/X or X1800/X1900. Maybe 2GB Geil value? What would work best within the budget?

How long a time frame are you talking about to have saved up enough money? The suggestions will change almost on a daily basis to take account of deals etc.

The 3700 is a good chip and offers good value still, if you only need single core then it is a good choice. The X2 3800 is also good and should overclock quite well, from memory it is roughly equivalent to having an A64 3200 on each core. The Opterons(I'm presuming either a 165 or 170 for the dual cores) will overclock well and have 2mb L2 cache.

Epox is a good choice but as you say have been out of stock for a while, if going for ATI graphics cards it may be worth looking at Crossfire boards, Asus do quite a good one.

I'd suggest a 512mb X1900 XT unless you are seriously thinking about SLi as it offers superior performance to the 256mb 7800GTX at a similar price and it simply a great card at a great price(comparatively speaking).

This is all pretty general but there isn't a huge deal of point getting specific until you are almost ready to order :)

Thanks for the reply, i wont be able to order for a good while yet. As you said, suggestions will change daily and by the time I do order, something new might come out. So, i'll see what's on offer when I do finally order, just wanted a rough idea that's all. Cheers :)
