A quick ripping / encoding question

I was just wandering, as you would have the file you are encoding on your hard drive already so it wouldn't have to read it off of the disc, which might make it faster. But then again probably wont be hugely noticeable.

As regards to copyright. Is it illegal for me to be backing up my own DVD's. I'm not very good at keeping them in a readable condition / lost

With regards to copyright, TO MY KNOWLEDGE- and this may be incorrect- you're entitled to backup media of which you are the original owner (e.g. DVDs you've puchased), but not permitted to distribute it. Search the net, I doubt such info will be hard to find, don't take my word for it.

This was my belief as well. Im pretty certain its correct

I have just a few questions. Mainly with codecs.

Ive been ripping them into .avi ( which i understand is the container )
Ive been using the Xvid ( Mpeg-4 ) codec. Now is this a good one to use, i have the ability to use either that or Mpeg-4 FFmpeg or H.264. Do they other other things and is there one which is regarded as the best ?

The only real important thing is that i can play the files on my PS3 of my external HD.
Ive been limiting the files to 1GB. Im not particulary fussed with quality being huge

Also do you know any nice web sites which will explain all the jargon such as dinterlace and anamorphic etc. I find it all a bit confusing

As you can tell im a noob when it comes to this :)
