I've just had my old 1156 socket mobo die on me - was looking to upgrade anyway, but my hand has been forced. I've been pointed towards AMD CPUs, but I'm not sure, I've not had one for a decade. I do a bit of gaming, all sorted GPU and memory wise, just mobo and CPU I need.

Anyway, this is what I have in my basket at the moment:

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9370 Black Edition 4.40GHz (4.70GHz Turbo) (Socket AM3+) Processor - OEM

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

Basically, my question is can I get more bang for my buck for under £300? Oh, and I'm sure I can, as I said, my hand has been forced and I need to get this sorted ASAP =)

Why would you buy the 9370?? I have my 8350 overclocked to 5.0ghz at the moment. Idles from 12-21c and on full load from 55-62 (which never happens really)

You definitely want to go AMD or is Intel an option too? I don't know about AMD sockets and such, though they are good processors.

No idea why I'd buy it haha, that's why I've requested assistance =)

I'm only air-cooled with An Arctic Pro Freezer 7 Rev. 2, so won't go too mad on the OC until water is an option.

Supported in Rev.4:

CPU Support

Any way to find out which one OcUK stock? I can't see it stated on the product page.

Not sure, you could ask in CS and see if they can tell you.

I would look at this for AMD.

It's my main system, so a bit of everything really - gaming (HD7850, no immediate plans to upgrade), hooked up to a TV for media consumption, a bit of graphic and web design, the usual.

Didn't run into many performance problems with the old i3 tbh, but it's time to move on.

So the 990FX Chipset is unnecessary? My research was leading me that way, as I'm unlikely to go multi-GPU any time soon!
