Hi

I'm looking at swapping my GF's old Radeon 9600 (AGPx8) out with something with a bit more power.

I've always been in the Nvidia camp for graphics so I'm not really sure what a 9600 is, could somone compare it to a Nvidia GPU model so I've got a rough idea how many generations she is behind.

I would guess it might be similar to a 5600?

Radeon 9600, 128MB, 500MHz/324Mhz

Cheers

Thanks for the info now I know where I stand -)

Sorry about the sig it was a direct paste job from my profile on dfi-street where if your sig isnt detailed enough you get banned =(

It's roughly the same as an FX5600, little bit faster.

Basically if your counting the 8800 its 3 generations behind. Even a lowly 7300gs/gt would be a good improvement (make sure its an 8pipe card if you get a GS).

The non-pro version is probably closer to the 5200.
Lol, no chance. The 5200 is absolutely laughable. Its rubbish, even a non-pro 9600 won't have a problem in performing much better.

Just make sure your upgrade is AGP, obviously. (did they make an AGP 7300?)

just checked and they did release the 7300GT on AGP but its the same price as a 7600gs AGP. In which case you should get the 7600GS AGP card.

Not according to the benchmarks that I linked.

In CoD and UT2003, the 9600 ~ 5200 Ultra

In Quake 3 Team Arena the standard 5200 performs way better than the 9600.

In most games I'd say the 9600 non-pro sits somewhere in the middle of the 5200 and 5600. But there are times when even the 5200 beats it.

However a 9600pro or 9600xt is an entirely different story, and even in games like Quake 3 which seem to favour Nvidia cards, the 9600pro/xt is much closer to the 5600. In all other games it is far superior.

:D
