I've always just assumed the staff in large music stores were useless but today was my first experience of it. A friend of mine bought a guitar from there, and brought it home only to realise there was a crack running along the top of the body which he'd not noticed. I'd not noticed it myself till giving it a closer look, and since it'd just been taken out of the box after he'd got it home was clearly nothing to do with him.
The next day he took it back and handed it over to the same salesman who sold it to him, who remarked that he'd known about the crack and couldn't believe that someone had been sold it. My friend pointed out that he himself had sold it to him. Anyway, it turned out there was no like for like replacement so he got stuck with a store credit of £230, strange since he thought he'd paid £250 for the guitar but the very generous salesman had actually charged my friend £20 for all the stuff he'd thrown in (a strap and tuner my friend didn't actually want) meaning even if there was another £250 guitar available he'd have to pay the difference!
It turned out there was a very decent sounding Yamaha for £250 so I convinced my mate to haggle the salesman down to the £230 he had, which he succeeded in doing, and then asked if he could have a new set of strings for the inconvenience (been over a week since he bought the original guitar, leaving him with no guitar and £250 out of pocket) and since the ones on the guitar were dull and part rusted. The salesman's response? "Nah mate, I think you're just being cheeky now." I couldn't believe it what I was hearing: after the bloke lied to him in the first place about the guitar, and been generally unhelpful since he then had the never to call my mate cheeky for the sake of 5 quid! What an utter ****.
So, word of advice, never shop at Sound Control (though you probably knew that already). Oh, and don't buy the £250 Tanglewood acoustic with a crack down it which has now been put back for sale at the Tottenham Court Rd branch.

Aye, sound control are pants (generally) although I did speak to a guy who worked there when I was interested in importing a guitar and he was very helpful indeed.
