A real brain buster.

I got a 5850 Extreme 1GB about a month ago, which was DOA so I replaced it straight away. Now the new one is having problems too.

Occasionally when I boot up, the GPU fan will spin at 100% and no display will be shown.

Now I know that the fan spinning at 100% is a safeguard when it hasn't posted right or something, but this only happens intermittently, but less likely to happen on a cold boot.

I have seen other people with this problem but I don't know whether it is the capacitors in the card which are faulty or the voltage supplied by the PSU (750W).

Has anyone heard of this issue and know which component is broken?

I know I have missed some info, so ask and you shall receive, I would really appreciate some help as I am a student and can't really afford to go round replacing everything to work out what is broken.

I had this problem with my 5850 and it turned out to be an incompatability between the Power supply/Mobo/5850 - note that niether was broken!

5850 with Mobo(P5Q) and PS(Dark Power pro 750W) - 100% fan at boot sometimes.
5850 with Mobo(P5Q) and new PS(Antec True Power 650W) - fine for nearly a year.
5850 with new Mobo(P8P67Pro) and (Dark Power pro 750W) - fine for months.

It really is a pain to get to the bottom of it if you have the problem but a new PS sorted it for the old machine.

So are you saying swapping any of them will fix it?
I used to use it with a P5Q (which it happened with) but now I have an asrock z68 which it happens on more often. The PSU is a Tagan Piperock 750W.

Honestly, and i'm not just saying this (or making it up) I have never had a Tagan that's actually worked. I went through 3, 1 was DOA, 1 was pushing 9v on the 12v rail and 1 worked for 4 days.

I'm not saying that, that's your problem but IMHO they are as bad as unbranded POS.
